Here is mine but with a Lancer.

Most of you guys have seen my Lancer. Not too bad.

I went to a Small private own used dealership, and was looking at a 98 Ford Ranger. Also a 2002 Nissan Frontier :-)

At that time, I was giving up on my Lancer and thats when I had my back bumper yellow(not painted. Accolade color)

It was perfect except for the back bumper not being painted.

I took it for a drive, had some laughs, then he comes back saying he will give me $500 for my car. YES!, $500!!!

WTF am I suppose to do with $500???

The Ranger was $6k(round up) and had some wires hanging in the inside. Previous owner had a system(looks like) and un-plugged the rear speakers. Also, fog lights had some wires hanging in the front, and cabin with gueto switch, and horn didn't work so it had it's own button.

I wasn't really trying to get that one, but damn. $500 for my Lancer. I just got up, and left without saying a word. lol

I am a buyer for a fairly large chain of dealerships... Your mileage is average at best, and if your car is straight(no paintwork, no mods, no stories) it should fetch 19-20 in the wholesale market. At Manheim(largest dealer only auctions in the world) that is what they are doing. Black-book(what dealers use) has ratings of "clean, average, and rough" with your miles and if your car is straight it falls at average which is $19,950. Just some info...

I have 50,000 miles on my 05. I calculated that buying a beater would be far more expensive for me than just having one car and driving it a lot.

My evo is my beater

I dont necessarily agree with this. The idea of having a beater (imo) isnt necessarily to save gas. I have a beater to keep mileage down on the evo, and just to not have to pointlessly drive it. ie..Ill just take my hatch to the grocerey store that way I dont have to worry about door dings, crashing, etc...

I am not drawing conclusions based solely on this site. I am basing it on my firsthand experience buying and selling (using everything from autotrader to cars.com to ebay to dealers to this site). I kept my eyes open to cars in a 600 mile radius during prime selling season and these cars are just plain hard to sell. Perhaps its different on the coasts but you try emailing someone in between and they will practically beg you to come check out the car.
My entire point is that its rare you'll sell ANY car quickly unless its in demand "at the moment". The key to selling a car and getting what you want for it is being patient, keeping the car clean and detailed, and advertising it. The worst way to sell a car and expect to get a fair price when your rushed for any reason.

To the other guys who had mentioned beater cars and second cars..

The Evo can be a great daily driver, but its not the cheapest car to own and maintain if your not doing all the work yourself. The biggest problem I see when it comes to Evo owners is their in way over their head, not to mention they then run up a huge credit card debt modifying it. And then they get bored, or realize their in too deep and sell it, but they need to sell it quick.

Car owners need to be realistic about their purchases. Having a nice car is great, but its not the most important thing in the world. If you own an Evo, and dont want to put additional mileage on it, and you can't afford an inexpensive beater, then you probably can't really afford to own and maintain the Evo. Not that its necessary to be able to own a second car, but I typically buy beaters for under $2000, between repairs and maintainance and insurance, it costs me under $4000 in that year to own the second car. That is under $100 a month, if your that strapped for cash, then a car like the Evo as a primary daily driver is probably not a good investment for you as your probably struggling to pay other bills too just to own the car.

This is obviously all rhetorical as the original poster was just making an observation, but I do like reading these threads. I also like seeing the different opinions, some are pretty good, others are somewhat misinformed and unrealistic.

Thumbs down Evo resale value same as a Kia?

Just wondering if everyone out there agrees with me that the Evo has one of the worst resale values out there. I have a 2005 Standard Evo 8 garage kept with only 8,000 miles. I was quoted $20,000 as trade in value. Is it normal that after 18 months of owning a car it's already depreciated 33%?! How much would my car be worth to a private party? Also is when is the best time of the year to sell a car?

I paid $22,000 for an '03 Evo VIII with 15,000 miles on it. It was in perfect condition though. Purchased late in '06.

according to kbb an Evo with your miles and in excellent condition is valued at 28K. they have the trade-in value listed at 25K. so yeah you go lowballed.

My experiences that must dealers don't know/appreciate what an Evo is... To them, its just a "Mitsubishi Lancer". I'd sell privately if you could as most people know what the car is really worth. IMO at least...

I would look on Kelly Blue Book or Edmunds.com to find out the round about number they should have paid. Most dealerships go off of those numbers, but only with some haggling. It pays to know how to sell.
