The official Evo X notchy/grinding transmission thread
It is notchy at low engine speeds...oddly enough when running the car to red line the shifts are incredible. I haven't miss shifted the car once and no grinds at all that are not driver error.
Anyone else have this problem?
Not necessarily grinding but I dont know how to explain it, sort of a notchy type of feeling. This is my first manual trans car and I do not know if all cars feel this way but sometimes the car will not left me shift into a lower gear? Like if I am cruising at 4th and wanted to downshift, it will not let me engage 3rd smoothly...or not at all..

There is a little bit of notchiness when cold but it's not bad at all. I finally observed what some of you guys are seeing when shifting from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd. I get the same slight crunch when I shift fast. Not bad. Hopefully, it goes away.
My STi was much worse. It was really notchy for the first 10k miles. I had to change my driving style. Order went from - lift off gas, step on clutch, then shift - to - step on clutch, lift off gas, shift. It felt a little weird but it worked for shifting fast.

I think it may have something to do with not having a independent reverse gear. I think the 1st and 2nd gear work together for reverse. I noticed sometimes it has problems getting into reverse. What I do is put it in 1st and move up a bit then get into reverse. I noticed this resolves the problem.
It seems as though this also solves the whole 1st-2nd-3rd gear notchiness. That's what I can come up with for now.

be leary...
i had my transmission replaced, my notchy got grindy quick, lol - 1143 miles and it was like i was gonna cry everytime the car shifted... new tranny doing ok 1600-1700 miles now and its notchy but i try to ignore it, not really sure but i think its not as notchy as the first transmission

Dude, I've owned a IX and had no problems with it, at about 17k miles 2nd and 3rd gear syncros were out, and it got notchy then started to grind every time I shifted. This is how my X feels, at first it was notchy and now its starting to grind. This is not normal.
this is my third mitsu as well but my X grinds every time 1-2 2-3. It doesn't matter if i am going slow or fast. Doesn't matter if it's in high rpm or not. But if you slow down your shifts (i.e pause while shifting, or double clutch) then there is no problems. But i shouldn't have to do that on a $42,000.00 car.
are you blipping the throttle to match revs? cruising in 4th and then downshifting into 3rd the rpms will jump. you have to blip the throttle to match revs. if you're already doing this then i've no clue what's going on. if you haven't been doing this then give it a try.
When do you blip the throttle?
It may be my inexperience but I think I am pretty good now haha No more stalling, now more super slow starts...smoother shifts etc ! I just hate how every integra on the road wants to race me ! I just ignore them and cruise in 5th (But still end up beat ing them on the highways
)
yes and no
if i would have been ask when the car had between 0 and 800 miles i would say it shifted like a dream but know it is not really grinding but rubbing all the time in different gears at different times dose not seem to have any consitiant issue but it is offten

Mine is notchy 1-2, 2-3.
I talked with my service manager, and he spoke with the instructor running the Evo class for the techs and he said the X he drove to the class did the same thing.
He claimed that this was "normal" during the first few thousand miles and the car learns itself and breaks in drivetrain components.
Now I'm not sure if I believe this or not. But that's what I was told.
