Lancer Evolution XI goes hybrid [merge]
I said it as soon as the X came out.....they are out of competetive racing and are now only focused on consumers not performance. Don't get me wrong, the X is a great car, but too big for competetive WRC. Damn shame
I'm pretty sure all-electric would make more sense. 10 times easier on maintenance, electric parts are a meager motor (or 4 smaller motors on each wheel), almost non-existent drivetrain, set of batteries or capacitors...
And BTW, breathing emissions is a cause of CANCER....
And BTW, breathing emissions is a cause of CANCER....
Ok lets break this down.
Maintenance:
It may be less over a period of time but when it breaks it will cost a TON to fix. IE motor bad, batteries need replaced, etc. None of that will be cheap especially with the cost of the batteries that they run in them now.
Initial cost:
Obviously will be higher plus higher electric bill. It better get a really high mpg to balance this out. For a hybrid also you still have an engine that needs maintenanced so........where is this cheaper on the consumer?
Upgrades:
Who knows. With so few parts you don't have many options except remove weight, bigger electric motors, more batteries, etc. For more power you will need more batteries IE more weight. Its so counter productive. You will gain so little for so much cost (have you seen the cost of the so called lightweight batteries that are used now?
).
Basically, the idea is great but only for economy grocery getters not performance cars until a lighter weight more efficient and cheaper battery is made.
Also to add to this with the higher electric usage of the WORLD due to more electric or hybrid cars we will need more power plants which create more pollution because those stupid wind farms cant support a power grid they are ONLY peak power providers.

If they are going to change to hybrid i hope they dont call it an Evo; that would be blasphemous. I dont want my car being associated with some metrosexual weenie mobile with narrow donut tires and an exhaust note like a wet queef.
**** you
Here, I hope you've had chance to see specs for this grocery getter of 2011
- 300 mile range
- 45 minute QuickCharge
- 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds
- Seats 7 people
- More cargo space than sedans
- 2X as efficient as hybrids
- 17 inch infotainment touchscreen
Base price 50K awfully close to future evos.
I personally love the software upgradable touchscreen, downloadable skins, gauges etc
.
That's great news. You know why? Because centralized power generation is much more efficient, pollution is better controlled and away, no overhead with gas delivery to gas stations. It will cost you less regardless.
But sure, trading for it that dry stinky queef (or two) seems sooo wrong.

Why is this half the price of the Roadster? I can understand, the Roadster is much more performance oriented, but I'd say the power output is probably similar since the Roadster is a featherweight Lotus body and this bigger sedan is not terribly far behind it in 0-60... but at HALF the price? The Roadster was/is one of my favorite cars... too bad they had such horrible transmission problems (can't even develop a TWO gear transmission to handle the torque???).
No Evolution iteration has ever gone a full five years.

I'm a bit 50/50 on this idea. When i read the title i was like maybe it wouldn't be too bad but then i read the article and my heart sunk. Don't get me wrong i'm all for better economy and emission and i like the MiEV IX concept and with the CAFE getting more strict by the year I can see Mitsu moving more into Hybrid/Electric tech. But for the Evolution to be solely like this brings a tear to my eye, if there was a separate trim then fine. Like some ppl have said we wouldn't know its potential until it is released or until they release official specs. All we can do now is play the waiting game. I still would rather have a turbocharge 100% gasoline engine but if Mitsu have to leave the US because they couldn't keep up with CAFE then our parts would be a hell of a lot more expensive than the hybrid's maintenance.
For those who absolutely hate the idea then write letters to Mitsu or call, email, twitter or whatever, instead of sitting back complaining and doin nothing.
