Lancer Evolution XI goes hybrid [merge]
Calm down guys, there will be a gasoline AND an electric Evo... Mitsubishi will make the dumbest move if they remove the Evo's ability to run on gas... BMW and Audi are making Electric version of their sport cars but they're not getting rid of the gas version (135i and R8 for example, both have electric versions being developed as we speak/read)
I really don't think it will be that terrible. The 4b11t is an amazing motor and now it will be hooked to an electric for better economy. I bet the electric motors will be for the economy. You can still probably upgrade the petrol engine and get more power out of it. I mean everyone is moving to hybrid they need to keep up with the 2016 regulations.
I have seen supercharged Toyota Yaris' and Prius' run a fairly competitive track times. They can make power and they have good mileage too. If people can make another hybrid that was totally meant for economy fast then the new Evo can be fast too. Here in Utah I saw a Yaris get a better track time than a 240 with an sr20 swap and only a few seconds behind an NSX around Miller Motor Sports.
Look at all the electronic things that Mitsubishi pioneers. Like DLP televisions, they make elevators, air conditioning and all sorts of other electronics. They know what they are doing when it comes to electrical things.
The Tesla accelerates rather rapidly and it is full electric. Yes it is based on a Lotus chassis and is much much much lighter. It still accelerates nicely and gets up to speed nicely.
I just don't think we should knock it till it comes out. Everyone was pissed about the 4b11 even though it was far superior to the 4g63, people *****ed and they still do. Now it will be a performance and economy car. My only complaint is the one that most are saying. The damn car is heavy as hell and that is bad for performance. Not to mention tire wear while going in the damn corners hot like your suppose to in a performance car.

The next generation Evolution will not be alone in its move to become a hybrid; Nissan is going to give the next gen GT-R the same treatment.

It is no secret that Mitsubishi have been for years contemplating on how to make the evolution more economical yet still have the high performance that it is known for. Back when GDI was king in the late 90's and early 2000's in japan there were rumors that the then to be launched evo 7 would have a Turbo GDI engine to give better economy but it never materialized.
I for one expected this was going to happen it was only a matter of time...

It had to happen. I mean everyone is moving toward this whole better efficiency thing. I am surprised that the car companies are not brining over CRDI diesel engines to put in all the cars like they are over in Europe. I still don't think it will be all to terrible other than the car is heavy.
I didn't know the GT-R was going to the same tech though.

Okay one thing that scares the hell out of me is they are possibly moving to a 1.6 liter petrol engine. That sucks IMHO if they do move to that granted it would be turbo but its just not right.
So that is two complaints for me. Lose weight and keep the engine at a 2.0 if you must move on with this. electric motors are as of now rated at 81 horses a piece. That is one for each drive axle.
Any other info on this stuff?

who really buys an evo for anything other than aggressive looks and mind bending performance though? in my opinion this is a terrible marketing ploy by mits that is just disgracing the evolution breed. i would rather the evolution name be killed off than continue on in a faux-performance hybrid guise
five seconds off a 0-100 time is a big difference but i am not sure the mass automotive market will be so fast to move away from gas engines we need explosive liquids going boom to make us happy.... IMO
The electric Mini Cooper is a full 2 seconds slower from 0-60 vs. the JCW Mini or about 1.5 seconds slower than the Mini Cooper S or a full second slower than the base Mini.
Also, electric cars are not necessarily more environmentally friendly than gas powered cars.
I would MUCH rather see Mitsu go the direction of alternative fuels (Flex-fuel) and Eco-Tech style engines (ala Ford SHO).
IMO ethanol and bio-diesel will be the better road for clean energy cars.
Just my 2 cents.

great. more junk to go wrong on my car. like ACD wasn't bad enough.
i didn't buy my evo 'cause it was good on gas. i don't need it to have more MPG. now i won't even be able to work on the car myself, any more.
i will not be buying this car.
