Evolution MR - Mitsubishi Racing [MERGED]
realistically, a reliable 330hp, or 20% power increase, for the US market, isn't gonna come w/o increasing displacement, or increasing the power band/redline. increasing redline is too costly therefore you're left with displacement. Increasing displacement would require additional R&D, if the motor isn't already done. Also, increasing displacement is an attribute that would afford the company the opportunity to introduce the next model... ie Evo IX
if mitsu's trying to get its P&L in order, I doubt it will be making major changes to its roadmap until a plan to get the business in shape, is in place.
Maybe this has already happened. I doubt it though.
if i was running the show, I wouldn't make any major changes that would expose the business to unnecesary risk when the gains didn't justify it.
Therefore, I don't think Evo will be getting a major change for awhile yet - two years though it might be 2005MY.

Mitsi wouldn't increase the displacment, well if they did it would probably be only for the US market.
Because if they increased the displacment in other markets then that would stuff up the evo in its Group N and Group A classing.
Whats the point in ralling if you are only racing yourself as down here in NZ the Group N class is made up of evo's and sti's. Now if they increased the displacment of the evo then it could affect its classing.

Apparently the February Popular Mechanics states that the MR is coming to the US for 2005 as per thread on nasioc.com:

That'd be great news.

Mitsu really needs to one-up subaru in order to stay in this game. Thus sending the MR to the US would be the ultimate one-up.
After all, the US STi is a little more advanced with the diff adjustments..
The "MR" and yeah,I know I have been whining about this but whatever, is the natural evolution of the EVO.
I appreciate the RS coming for those "die hard club racers" I just want to see the second year for the EVO bring some improvements instead of "removed items" ..
I can see the
marketing guys after a while saying (in Japanese of course).........:In Japanese/American accent " This EVO too expensive for US Market.."
...Next year, we bring it but with LESS OPTIONS and in fewer number for cost provisions.."
Yeah, I know they will still have the regular NON-RS Evo, but how many of those are they bringing over for 04??
Man, I can just SEE the EVO "MR" in my garage and on the road right now..I wish they brought that one over in limited numbers..
Supposedly the MR will be available in Japan in GSR and RS trim. If they bring it over here, I hope we will get both trim levels as well.
Interestingly enough it appears that the current RS in Japan is still available with 5-speed as well as with 6-speed.
Personally, I can do without the ACD/AYC. The suspension changes and the aluminum roof panel would be great to see over here.
Ideally, I'd like to see a USDM MR in GSR and RS trim.
My ideal Evo would be an MR in RS trim with the following options: titanium turbo, xenon lights and ABS (switchable would be ideal). 5-speed and non ACD/AYC would be just fine with me, as long as there is the front LSD.

Well hopefully all the reorganization and business analysis and smarty folks there are getting a clue that selling a 2003 car in 2004 is suicide and fix it with the 2005. and that options are what make sales. It allows people looking to get in the game an oppurtunity and those who want more goods to get what they want.
It would be great to start with the RS (base model with Front LSD - standard) and just be able to check off additional goods. Power Windows, Power Locks, Power Mirrors, 5 speed, 6 speed, optional SMT for either manual, auto, MR hp increase performance package, sound deadening, Rear Wiper, Big Wing, Sunroof, etc.
The more options you throw in the more difficult the manufacturing process and can cost more, so 4 package groups would be great with the option to custom tailor if willing to pay a little more would satisfy everyone.
RS, RS-UJ, GSR, GSR-MR Those they have and work well as package cars. Mitsu could also offer the custom order option.. It would destroy Subaruy if they offered a bigger color pallete for custom ordered option packages.

The MR is making 310hp over in Britain right? I'd imagine with a few engine tweaks, slightly different cam profiles, lightened pistons, rods, crank,or some manufacturing process of some sort that always trickles down every year or two would yield another 5- 10 hp.
Maybe an electro hydraulic power steering pump will show. that'll free up a few ponies.

This is for mitsu if you are reading this.
1. The US market is alot different than the other markets around the world.
2. Taking this into consideration is very crucial to success here.
3. We Americans like choices. We don't like limited options. We like to pick and choose what is right for us.
4. There is a market for the GSR ( for the cash strapped but still able to own an evo) Then there is the market for the RS ( for the extremists who live on the track and would strip their GSR anyway) And there is the market for the MR( for the person who wants the cream of the crop, the best of the best, the person who wants to distinguish themselves from the rest of the pack) All we want is options. That's all. Even if it is produced at let's say 200 units a year and a waiting list of 6 months( not to be taken literally) but just the fact that we know that we can just check that option is very appealing to us. So bring the MR here. We promise you won't regret it
We are really tired of being left out in the cold.

Exactly Darkchild... I'm rather enjoying watching my bank accounts grow right now. I'll never settle for anything again. Until the Evo or maybe some other car offers what I want at a reasonable price I'll just keep watching my money grow.
I guess the next closest car to the fun factor may be the upcoming elise? I need to run one around a track a bit to see.

In Europe Mercedes has long option lists and it used to be common for people to preorder their car and wait literally 6-12 months until delivery. Americans would not usually put up with this or at least they say they don't. However they end up waiting for the best cars at least as long and often end up not getting them at all ... for a whole host of reasons.
