Yet another thread about Turboing a 03 lancer.
This seems the easiest to tune, open loop all the way from 10load and up. Do you have trouble telling if the car is in open or closed loop, is there something you log that tells you when it is? Also, what is the reason for wanting to have tuned cruising settings, just gas mileage or other reasons too?
O3 Lance:
Yes it definitely has some routines running which is why i recommend against it. I've had scenarios where it started using my rear o2 and really messed with the AFR big time!

RS, I went ahead and switched back that bit and dropped my open loops down to 10. The wife took my car to work today and this is my first day back from vacation. 12 days of paid time off man it was nice
back to work now though
gonna flash my new map tonight after work. This may sound like a dumb question as I have been tuning for awhile now. After I have successfully removed ALL of the knock how do I go about tuning for power? Seriously this has me mega confused do you just advance the whole timing map up one degree in a certain area like for example 120 load on up and 2500 rpms and up? Do you advance one cell at a time and if you get knock then pull it back and go to the next one? kinda late in the game for me on this lol but it really does confuse the hell out of me

Use the graphing feature in ecuflash and create a smooth ramp up to redline. You equally want a smooth ramp down as the turbo spools up . If you get knock early in a pull dont pull timing everywhere just concentrate removing it on that spot which may perpetuate knock to areas where it wouldn't' have been.
Try to keep your fuel consistent like 11.2 across the board.
Lance send me an email.
I'll show you steven's map which i smoothed out so you can see what i mean :P

Build Has Been Completed
As soon as I get my tune figured out at 5psi I will do some 3rd gear to redline pulls and post some hp and trq numbers using vdr. Then do it all again at 8-10psi
Ok so I have read through and looked and looked so please I am not asking for asistance on what I need but rather if my list of components is complete or what I might add or subtract. So without further delay...
1) 16g turbo from evo 8 with oil lines etc.Done
2) intercooler and piping from evo 8 Done
3) speedcorps forge adjustable wastgate actuator Done
4) spring to lower boost from speedcorps Done
5) walbro 255 lphDone
6) wrx 440cc injectorsDone
7) adjustable FPR Cancelled for now
8) BOV evo 9Done
9) 16g manifold from Boostedlancer and Zulu Done
10) Head gasket shim to lower comp. Cancelled
11)Ecuflash, tactrix, and evo8 ecuDone, done and done
12) any evo aftermarket or stock downpipe Done
Items I have gotten:
Zip, nada, nothing lol.
Now a couple questions for all you evo educated folk out there lol. Should I really consider finding a 10.5 hotside or is this just for better flow and more ponies? What does the stock evo 8 turbo run as far as boost using the stock actuator? Does it have to be out of an evo 8 for this setup to work? will a 150mm head gasket shim drop my comp to 9.5:1, if I get said shim would the actuator lowering the boost still be necassary? Can I run 10-11psi safely with the shim on my daily driven 03 lancer es? Do I need the o2 housing for the turbo as well? Is $300 good for a evo 8 turbo with o2 housing 30k on it and no shaft play? What would be a good size intercooler for this setup if I want to keep the crash bar in front and if I remove it for the evo intercooler does that mean I am toast if I am hit head on? I have just gotten serious about boostin my car its an 03 lancer ES with about 78k on the motor and body, Zero engine mods just nice and clean and figured its time for engine mods now, I am not looking for ungodly power and I am on a very tight budget but want it reliable so I did my research and figured I would confirm with the authorities on the subject.

why does every evo guy say this... Some people do it because they dont have enough money to buy one such as myself, I love my turbo lancer, and when I get my tune completed I will love it alot better.
Now when evos drop in price most likely some of us will buy them so we can enjoy what we missed out on like me

in all honesty I could buy an evo if I wanted another vehicle payment which I don't. I paid $700 for my car initially. So since I had no payment and got a hell of a deal I decided this would be my project car. There really isn't anything to get. I don't plan on getting my lancer to run a 10 second quarter nor is this my desire I just like having something unique and a good mileage car with plenty of get up and go that I am proud to say I have built all myself with my own tools and knowledge. Please if all you have to say is I don't get it please say it elsewhere.

RS I don't think I have your email I will PM u mine tonight after I get off work. It sounds to me like I should be smoothly advancing the timing until I start to spool then smoothly retarding the timing as I build boost then begin advancing it again once I hit full boost?
then prolly about a year and a half ago i had the chance to own an unmolested evo 8 for 22k from the local dealer. i called the insurance ppl and i called my loan ppl. i could have bought the car and made the payments but the insurance for me was so high that i couldnt.
now if i were to do this all over again, and had an evo and a turboed lancer sitting in front of me, ya without a doubt id take the evo...unless there was a nice sti sitting there as well...that wold be a different story...mmm boxer engine purrrrrrrrr...time to drive the wrx!
josh

IF i ever picked up an evo, i would GUT it the first day, and turn it into my hill climb/timeattack car. would never be just an 'evo' it would just be my next race car.
but technically my next race car is a CRX, sitting in my driveway for me and my buddy. will be droppin in the k26 stroker(low compression, and sleeved) motor next month, machine shop and assembly should be done shortly.. LOL yep im nasty!

Well your half right the truth is for the amount of money I have into my car and to be blunt is less than 8k for everything the car paint bodywork tranny componemts to get it up and running in the beginning and all the stuff spent on my turbo kit including exhaust work and gauges I could have a nice half of an evo lol. As far as my labor I don't care this is my hobby and what I like to do is not work its my past time and a fun one at that seeing the finished product. Ya its a pain at times but you don't learn anything without making mistakes so I know what I am in for. I enjoy this and at the end pf the day I do have something unique and proud of. An evo may be easier but where is the fun in that?
well because it's the truth? The guy has spent a whole lot of. money getting all of these parts + his time+ the headaches in general such as trying to get things just right without popping the motor, all of those little quirks that come with custom work, etc etc. Like I said though, i'm all for people being unique... right now Evo's have come wayyyyyyy down as the older ones are now getting more and more miles on them, he wouldn't have to do all of this work and could sell a lot of the parts, make some money back and have a pretty nice down payment, but hey, if he's happy with doing it then cool keep at it!
I reply to your post about "why not just buy an evo" and say to you, "why not just buy the Ferrari?" I mean, you spend an extra thousand on the FP Black turbo, so just buy the Ferrari already, right? My reasoning is sound I think....
I actually think most evo owners(excluding roadspike) just don't actually know the cost of a regular lancer...about 1/3.
Anyhow....I love 03lances thread, by far the best information out there for me. So, 700 dollar investment, plus about 8k overall parts and such? Cheapest Evo I can find in my area is about 16k, unless you count the 3k one that's wrecked with no front end. That's also from a private party, so who knows what you are getting into bed with on that car.
Oh, also...you can tell the difference between 2 fellas in this thread right away by their sigs. method says "tuned by someone else", 03lances says "tuned by me, myself and I"....that's the real reason I am down with the lancer, I don't feel like I lose a lot if I ruin it while learning, but I'd cry a little if I was paying off an EVO and ruined it

Id rather have a mustang or gto then an evo if i was gunna buy someones used, ragged on, and taken to the track car. and if i wanted a nicer DD, i definately would get an evo it has the same damn interrior, id go ahead and step up to atleast a bmw, or a fully loaded leather accord/tl/tsx or nicer (or my supercrew f150)
and if your debate next is going to be the power difference, if someone was that focused on getting into, say the 11s or 10s.. they could STILL do it for cheaper with the lancer they already own, then with buying an evo and modifying it to do the same. LOL

hrmmm... spending 2 k on turboing a lancer.. Versus.. Selling lancer, losing out on money spent, then having to spend 15+k on an evo.. hrmm.. tough choice.. LOL NOT! trade up for a bigger cop magnet, sounds smart.

I agree, I only meant that if the car was cheaper than 12k and not beat to **** because of retard owners cant keep maintence on thier cars then hell yes I would buy it compared to my lancer, but compare an evo to demons project really makes you think twice. SO if you evo guys are wondering why we bought a lancer... Expenses, investment, and of course FUN!!!
