??? WEIRD stereo install problem
Hey doods,
I'm moving my Pioneer Premier DEH-P760MP deck from the Ion into my 04 Lancer ES. The deck has been working fine all year. I installed it into the lancer, and it will not even power on. I have the ground wire connected to the same part of the frame that the stock deck grounds to, and even tried it without the ground wire at all, to no avail. I reinstalled the stock deck, and confirmed that it still works fine, so nothing is blown, and power is still getting to the right places.
I took my Pioneer over to the tech bench at Best Buy where my friend works, and it powered on there OK, even using the harness that I wired up. I confirmed that the harness adapter I bought specifically stated it would work with an 04 lancer, and that all the proper wires were connected together, using both the install guides, and even the wording directly on the wires. I then tested each lead on the new harness for continuity using a multimeter, so I know all the solder points are good.
I installed it back in my Ion (using the Ion harness, of course) and confirmed the deck is still fully functional. being out of ideas, I checked all the appropriate fuses in the Lancer, and even a few inappropriate ones. I am at a total loss as to what is wrong.
Maybe a useful note: I noticed that the stock deck will not power on unless the housing of it is grounded against the mounting frame in the dash. I didn't realize why it wouldn't turn on unless it was fully seated until I saw it spark slightly when I slid it in. I thought maybe the Pioneer deck didn't like being grounded in this manner, but it still wont turn on, even when fully removed from the dash., with or without ground wire. This is the 7th time I've installed a deck in a car, and the first time I've had a problem. I am f*cking lost. Please help!

the stock deck works on the current setup, and the new one does not? that means all your wires are hot. Assuming everything is plugged in right my first guess would be remote wire. But, you should be able to have the deck installed, and turn on your head lights, and then see the deck light up....jsut not on. i have a pioneer deck as well. My experience is that the remote wire is kindav screwy. Make sure your connection from harness to harness to deck is good. like the actual plastic conetions with the metal in them. The wire should not be faulty unless you visually see a break in the covering. If the deck is not dead your probelm has to be in the harness.
Check your remote wire, and try the headlight thing. Pioneer decks have lights on them for when the deck is not powered on, but the headlights are on.

The factory unit grounds through its chassis to the mounting points. you NEED to run your own ground.
correct, cut the ground you connect on the 2 harnesses and ground it out to the dash somewhere. IF you are still not getting power, check your red and yellow wire, sometimes the plugs on the harness themselves are faulty
if you don't ground give the radio it's own ground you'll notice is you turn on the car and plug in the harness which gives the radio power, when you go to plug in the antenna it will spark. Like everyone said, you just gotta ground that ish and it'll be good.

No, your deck wouldn't be grouned *only* through the antenna, it'll be grounded through the chassis via the metal brackets on the side. Antenna would do some, but I think it would be minimal.

you should always ground your radio, (not solely through the antenna) If your radio is ISO mounted, which means it mounts to brackets that get screwed in to the dash, then it will usually ground through the ISO brackets. But I don't understand why you wouldn't ground out your radio. Are you trying to prove everyone wrong that your radio doesn't need a ground as long as your antenna is plugged in? If you don't ground it, it's only a matter of time until your radio is going to break, overheat or get extremely bad engine noise.
