Gas mileage mods?

I dunno if anyone else has went this road with their lancer, but since I plan to trade up to a lancer OZ rally after I pay this car off, I was wondering about something. How can I get the most gas mileage from my 2003 lancer ES? I know that my stepbrother saw great improvements in his Focus' gas mileage with a short ram air intake, but would the lancer have the same change? I'm basically just wanting to know if their are any mods I can make to the car to increase it's miles per gallon, any horsepower increase or performance improvements are just a bonus to me. I'll worry about making a fast lancer when I have a better platform for it(I want a 5-speed dangit! lol)

Well i see you want a 5 speed but you can get an es 5 speed cause es and oz is basically the same thing so i would look for the cheaper of the two that you could find but on your question anything on the intake side suck as intake IM TB and anything that makes it so your engine doesent have to work as hard such as underdrive pully but just search around i have seen quit a few of these kinds of threads with all kinds of info

helping the motor breathe should improve gas mileage. but as just a hunch, i dont think anything is gonna improve to the point were you notice it. just a little here and there. gas mileage is optimized from the factory. wouldnt ya think. i mean it is a selling point and all.

I understand that you can get a 5-speed ES, but the OZ already has some things that I'd like to do to my car taken care of. Such as wheels, rear sway-bar, etc... it's not like I'm only gonna be looking for an OZ, but if one pops up reasonably priced when I'm ready to buy, then I'd probably get it. Thanks for the suggestions though. I do plan on getting a K&N filter, probably not go all the way with the short ram, but just attach it to my MAF adapter and use the airbox as a heat shield. I would also think that gas mileage is prioritized in stock form, but as I was saying, my stepbrother's focus increased to approximately 40 mpg hwy. I'm not expecting that myself, but it would be nice. I dunno if there's anywhere near springfield Mo that reflashes ecus, but I might look into it.

an ecu reflash or afc would help. if you want to keep stock appearance, take out the restriction in the box by removing the rivets and use a high flow panel filter and a ralliart snorkel. i've actually got a bunch of mods including an afc and i get on average 30-33mpg daily with a 38-40 best(which happened again recently last weekend on a 500 mile drive).

The intake will make a difference you can notice, however the more you put your foot into it the fater it will go away. same on the sxhauts side. thry somewhat compliment each other. Keep your tune ups current, timming belt, plugs fuel filter, air filer and dont forget the quality oil. On the oil PM me I can get you some really great oil for the long haul.

Sorry, I should've searched, you'd be surprised how many forums don't have that feature, so I kinda forgot. Anywho, good advice all around, I think I'll get an intake, keep the maintenence on schedule and drive less aggressively.

I get 33-34 constantly. CAI, header, testpipe, catback, AFC, backed out MAS screw. Breather mods + AFC and you can pick up a lot on the mileage. Seafoaming the intake doesn't hurt either along with fresh plugs.

When I was N/A, I was getting great gas milage. I had header/intake/exhaust/test-pipe. I got 33 city and 42 highway. Just take out all the catylitic converters and let the car breathe. Your milage might vary depending on elevation and climate.

When I strapped the turbo on, I'm getting 24 city and 32 highway now. Average, I'd say 26 to 27mpg based on how I'm driving now back and forth to work and school. Its 70% city driving if I had to estimate. Awesome gas milage for a turbo car with some kick to it. (I also have the pulley and light weight flywheel if that helps milage. I'm unsure.)

Sell Lancer. Buy Prius.

As they said, there's nothing you can do that'll raise your MPG more than 1 or 2. So just deal with what ya got.
