Another MPG thread 'cept this one has new info

Ok I am a MPG ****. I measure it on every vehicle I own every tank of gas. My life is not much different than that of Bill Murray in Ground Hog Day. I do the same things every day. I drive the same stretch of highway to work at the same time and the same speed. I get gas from the same connoco station everytime. I get a solid 30-31 mpg.

I broke the mold 2 weeks ago. I needed an oil change and I had a ton of this 10W30 "Resolute" brand oil from a car I sent to goodwill. It's about $.97 a quart. I figured I need to use it so I poured it in the car. Previously its been Mobil 1 5w30 since the beginning.

And my first tank of gas I get a solid 33 mpg. On the cheapest, wrong weight oil you can find.

Dino oil = +2mpg?

Someone else try it out. 2 mpg is significant these days.

Good observation. Are you aware the pressure in your tires can make significant MPG changes as well?

A oil change on Royal purple gave 3whp on a dyno on a car. Yes, sometimes oils can make small significant changes..

I switched to Royal Purple and the I could feel a difference, but without a dyno run, there is no way of proving it. I also noticed an increase in fuel economy.

Losing weight also helped in the fuel economy department.

On my trip to Memphis, I got 38 miles to the gallon. I was well pleased with that.

I'm a tire pressure **** too. I'm never more than 5lbs off on any of the tires. I swear nothing other than the oil changed. For work I drive 15 miles at 75 mph, and 2 more miles in town with a few stop lights and then the opposite on the way home. The Lancer doesn't move unless I take it to work. I drive my taurus on the weekends and as a grocery getter. The Lancer has a boring life, but it eats up all the work miles at 33mpg now so

is royal purple a synthetic oil?
I've been running Castrol Syntec in my car ever since I could remember. Would it be a good choice to try RP? ( Going turbo in a few weeks )

It is expensive. Amsoil is another good synthetic. I use that in my wife's car. It costs just about the same as the Royal Purple.

The point of the thread is I picked up 2mpg on the crappiest oil you can find versus Mobil 1 synthetic.
