Sometimes the VIII/IX owners need to feel vindicated; IX owners have a leg to stand on, VIII owners have none, the X is just better in every way. The stigma is mostly gone, but still lingers as can be seen from a couple of posters.
Great car OP!

2006 Evo IX or 2012 Evo X?

I am going to buy a Lancer Evolution next month after I graduate.

I'm deciding between a 2006 Lancer Evolution IX MR and a 2012 Lancer Evolution X GSR

Which one is faster in straight line?
- I heard that the newer 2011-2012 Evo X has a better factory tune, so their 0-60 and quarter mile times are improved, so the difference between the Evo X and Evo IX isn't that much in a straight line. Is this true?

Which one is faster in cornering?
Which one is more reliable?

Also, are there any advantages of having 6-speed compared to 5-speed?

Thanks

9 fastest in straight line
X faster in cornering since it has better handling
X more reliable since its hard to find a low mile 9
5 speed can handle more power than the 6 speed

I would personally go with the X since that is what I am aiming for.

Answer to all those questions is....

Depends on you.

Both machines are far more capable than 90% of the drivers out there can handle or use it for. The limit is not in the car. Get the one that's easier on your pocket books and that you are more attracted to.

I may be true that the X handles better than the VII or the IX, but you'd have way more fun cornering in the CT9A platform. Unless you plan on professionally racing the car, how fast it can corner doesn't matter nearly as much as how wide you're smiling when you drive it. This is just my $.02

The usdm x has plastic vents. No smoked out lights. No carbon fiber wing and is a heavier car. Still a fan of the 4g63 cast iorn power plant and still a fan of the 1st and 2nd gen eclipse from a performance standpoint. The ix looks way sleeker inside and out to me, not like a nike cross-trainer shoe. Do your own math

The CT9A is more raw when it comes to power and feel. The X is a smoother more comfortable ride. I chose the 9 because it was a limited amount and is the sickest evo to date in my opinion. I perfer lightly modded and fast thats where the 9 comes to play. The 8 and X are going to be just as fast if your going all out though. I wanted the X but it just wasn't me. Test drive them both that's the only way you would know. Milage doesn't mean anything as long as it was cared for. Everyone rebuilds the motor sooner or later anyways. Try to keep it stock, I dare you!

Two different engines you're looking at here. An older and most likely abused 4g63 vs a new 4b11. If both cars were in the same condition I would most likely pick the IX, however if it's a daily driver then a newer X (I wouldn't buy a 2012 due to the extreme depreciation as soon as you buy it) should be a more reliable car. It's all up to you, what you plan on doing with the car, and personal preference as either car would be an awesome choice.
