FYI the Lancer GT is FWD. Prob not the best choice for going uphill in the snow.

Pardon my ignorance, I live in California, but i thought FWD was more stable / better in the snow then RWD?

That's a stereotype that came about largely because most cars were very front heavy. So the front tires often had 60-65% of the vehicles weight on them, so they tended to get more grip than the lightly loaded rear tires in FR platform cars. The problem, especially in low grip situations but more or less universally, is that accelerating takes weight off of the drive tires.

Most cars are still front heavy so as a generic guideline, when it comes to snow, AWD > FWD > RWD.

It's worth noting that good snow tires trump which wheels are driving by a wide margin.

Pretty much this. Get snow tires for snow! Its worth the investment.

update on my buddy's RS:
He's been having a steady stream of issues. There was a factory reset for the ECU that made the car run kinda crappy (I don't know the details, just how he put it). The launch control no longer works. It's come to him having to lawyer up in efforts to get Ford to fix it. I assume this is a dealer issue, not Ford? Either way, they are getting their ducks in a row to file against Ford and we'll see how it goes. He wants to get rid of the car, but can't find another hatchback that he likes.

In another forum, Camaro6, somebody made the observation that Camaros have less issues than Mustangs because of the benefit of GM sharing R&D across platforms. In a Focus RS comparison to WRX/STI or the departed Evo X, you have the benefits of years of development and racing. I'm sure Ford will fix these problems eventually but it is worrying if they are giving individual people a hard time.

That's a dealership issue, not a Ford issue per se.
