I wouldn't want to track a unicorn like that. I'd rather make it a nice daily. Would suck to risk damaging a car you waited 6 months to find.

That's literally never gonna happen again... This was the unicorn of unicorns... That clean, all the right mods (except the turbo), and that price...Originally Posted by razorlab
I 100% agree, you just need to put some time and effort into it. Look what I sold a year or so ago for around that price:

I wouldn't consider it a unicorn, I tracked the hell out of it and it saw snow every single year, but it was in great condition compared to most.
There are a good amount of crap Evos out there now, most on their third and forth owners and a much younger owner base. However, you can still find good examples, you just have to work at it. You should expand your search to California as well.
OP wants an S2000. We all know there are nice Evo 8s out there for less than $20k. Hell for $20k I would be looking for an Evo 9. Cash talks.
Here is a 9 with 50k miles and a clean title local to OP listed for $22.5, I bet they would take $20k. https://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/ctd/5265163971.html Although I am not sure what to think of the RS door cards (roll up windows), never seen that on a Black GSR.

Daily driving the car in Vegas has proven about as hard on the paint as tracking it is. I have more rock chips on the front than I count on both hands. 3-4 or decent sized (3-4mm), and one of them even has a small dent to go with it... :/Originally Posted by ambystom01

As far as crash damage on the track, I tend to drive within my limits when pushing a car without a cage that fast around a track. So barring a mechanical failure (which would be another unlikely event with how I maintain the car), or someone else hitting me, I don't plan on having an off at the track. I don't try to drive through or out of mistakes. I'll just back off for that corner and go for a good time next lap..
Also, the point was more that the car he is looking for, a <$20k Evo 8, is attainable.

That thing is clean. Maybe its an RS with a stereo installed?

I'd rather get rock chips than hit the wall
. I get your point though. If I bought a car like that, I'd feel like a real bastard if something happened on track, even something totally out of my control, and it got wrecked. That's before I realized I just pissed $20,000 down the toilet since my insurer won't be covering any of it.
I suspect everyone who has ever tracked their car has said that they didn't plan on having an off track incident.

I would hate to crash my car too, but I wouldn't be out $20k. I buy trackday insurance when I go out. It's only been twice in the Evo, but I feel like a couple hundred dollars it totally worth it to get reimbursed if you wreck the car.Originally Posted by ambystom01

No one plans for it. But from watching a lot of videos, guys go off try to overdrive the car through a mistake, causing an off. IE: They turn in to early, which screws the line, but they still pick up the throttle (or stay in it), which causes them to run wide and put two off, and its all over from there. If you realize your just out for fun, and back off when a mistake like that is made, a lot of heartache can be avoided.

Exactly, nobody PLANS to have an incident.Originally Posted by ambystom01

I use track insurance for this very reason. Not really that expensive in the grand scheme of things if you think about it.

Unfortunately, track day insurance is only an option for some, and it's usually pretty limited. Until recently, almost no companies offered it in my area. One apparently now offers something that's reasonably affordable, but it only covers certain cars running certain non-competitive events.Originally Posted by letsgetthisdone

It's a completely different ball game when you're doing something competitive. I agree, a lot of the problems come from overdriving. However, overdriving happens when people, especially men, are competing against each other. It's like a drug. You see a time or position that you think you can reach, and you go for it. It's the same even in autocross. A lot of guys I know say "well I'll just do autocross, it's safe", yet cars have been written off by local autocrossers while autocrossing.

The parking lots that we use for autocross here in Vegas don't have anything to run into except the people, so I guess we're lucky lol

See, our events don't have medians in the middle of the lot lol. The closest thing to the racing line at one of the lots are some trees that are over 100ft away. considering the highest speeds in the sections closes to the tress are about 40mph, you'd have to do something extra special to get all the way over there. We stopped using the lot with light poles in the middle of last year..
