SRT-4 | Anything and Everything [ALL THREADS MERGED]
Personally I don't see how the roots of either are ****ty. Both Neons and Lancers are decent cars imo. They just serve a completely different set of needs. Besides that SRT and Evo owners got the good stuff, plus some, and very little of the bad (cept arguably the interior...which I happen to like).
hmm i was reading on a mitsu site that the Lancer OZ has the same frame/chassie as the evo with out the extra reinforcements, the Evo has been around since what ? 92 ? and the lancer since LONG before that, in my opinion they did something right. I just happened to stumble upon that info, so i would research more before i ever said An Evo is just another Lancer, cause i thought so till i researched it. As far as the Neon goes ... i have heard alot about those cars having problems and have known many people to own them, and they play both sides of the fence for liking and disliking, so i have nothing to say about the nean . sept i just dont like em
Some of you guys are amusing. First of all.. SRT-4 and Evo VIII.. Its going to be close. Period. As far as "Just a neon" I won't even tell you how the rest of the domestic population views the Evo. Continuing on... respect where respect is due. Srt-4s are fast little cars. Can't deny that. No point in tryin to argue it.
Also you can't claim its the same old unreliable neon... its not even the same damn motor..what are you basing that claim on? Give it time... if it fails after a year or two.. then jump of the bandwagon and hate it.. just give it time first.. you might be surprised...
This comming from someone who will NEVER own a 4 banger..
I respect all things fast.. regardless.

tested an srt-4 today.....
while trying to determine if the EVO is the car for me, i went and gave a srt a look. i left totally unimpressed. the car did drive ok, sounded good, and no salesman along for the ride. got alot of wheelslip trying to launch it, im sure idve gotten the knack of it if i had more time alone with it
the killer for me was the overall car, the build and materials is nowhere near the level of the evo. im not looking for a little drag car, i want the whole package. ill pay the extra $ for the evo. i am going to wait till my discout applies (mitsu
employee, 3% under dealer cost w/no destination charge $25,???!!!!) in the mean time ill take this opportunity to learn as much as i can about it and collect a few goodies before its arrival.

Isnt the srt-4 about 10 grand less as well? I would not buy a dodge but for the money it looks like a monster. I do think its funny the least exp turbo on the market has a boost gauge in the car when you but it.
I drove an SRT-4 before I bought my EVO. That car rocks.... It is truely unreal. If you compare the 40-80mph times its right there with the evo (within 2tens) We just get great numbers with the EVO due to fabulous launch capablities. The only neg was lots of wheel spin out of the corners and the fun gets cut short at the low redline of 6250. I wanted a larger car but for someone that wants a fun toy or for the guy on a bit of a budget this car is awsome.
I too am in the market for a new car and I've narrowed the choices to the Evo, SRT, and STI. Not wanting to make a decision until I can test drive all three cars (hopefully on the same day), I can say that the only one of the three that I have ridden it is the SRT and for the money....you can't beat it. For under 20k there is nothing else out there that can compete...We ran a 350Z from 20-80 and pulled a car length on it..I was impressed. Materials and workmanship fall short of both the EVO and the STI (I'm assuming), but for the money it is a great deal. Just my 2cents.
The car is built like rattling crappy plastic.. NASTY... But remember this, if the EVO were front-wheel-drive also, nothing would touch it!! It's always better to have AWD anyways, for many different reasons...
I drove one with a boost controller and intake, it still wasn't as fast as my stock EVO... Also, it had nasty torque steer!!

I think the nearest car (in spirit) to the EVO in the $20K range isn't necessarily the SRT-4. There is another turbocharged 4-cylinder car by a Japanese manufacturer, based on an economy sedan, with some major upgrades in the handling department. It often sells at a markup over MSRP, just like the EVO.
Of course, I refer to the Mazdaspeed Protege.
The SRT-4 will kill the Protege in a drag race, of course, but if you just want to go fast in a straight line, you're in the wrong department...

My point was that the Protege has received the same sort of reviews as the Evo. Sport Compact Car magazine: "Every aspect of the handling, from the steering feel, to the balance, to the level of grip is outstanding."
