2008 STU discussion
Thanks Pat. The above will be good to keep in mind after Saturday morning runs...
Wendover is like no other surface most will see
it's concrete from WWII w/lots of bumps from the expansion joints moving over the years. Having said that, it's also a huge surface, so I suspect a top of 2nd and/or 3 gear course set.
Really fun stuff when combined w/the Prosolo format

i've got a set of 225/45R17's used for 3 events from my old car that are just collecting dust - makes me wish i'd tried a larger size, had no idea they were gonna be in such tight supply when i got 'em back in april (they were widely available then)
alright, so i know it's not silly season for everybody yet, but i'm going crazy stuck in NYC for work during the week - and even crazier on weekends when i fly back to oregon and *don't* have a car to drive!! [i sold my spec v a month ago]. to keep sane, i remind myself that when i get back in the fall, i'll be buying an '06 evo ix se, and building it for STU
on that note, i am trying to gather as much information on parts that i can a) afford; and b) be competitive with [at least on paper - my driving is a whole other thing
].
can i get some feedback from the community on what i've put together so far? comments/suggestions are much appreciated [especially if i have any glaring STU-illegal additions/STU-legal omissions]:
coilovers: ohlins flag / zzyzx competition
springs: swift / hyperco
wheels: wedssport tc105n 17x9 +35 / volk racing ce28n 17x9 +35
tires: dunlop direzza z1 *spec 245/40R17 / bridgestone potenza re01-r 245/40R17
fsb: works 26mm / whiteline 26mm
rsb: works 24mm / buschur 25mm
bushings: works / energy suspension
intake: perrin
exhaust manifold: stock (buschur ported)
o2 housing: buschur
hi-flow cat: perrin / rick jung
wideband: aem
turbo-back exhaust: buschur
brake pads: hawk hp+
battery: odyssey pc680mjt
i wasn't sure about these mods - are they STU legal?
crank pulley: perrin
turbo inlet tube: perrin
turbo boost tube: perrin
no plans on modifying the beautiful SE interior, either [i.e., no kirkey seat for me!]

From what I have tried to absorb (I am probably wrong or some may disagree):
Both are excellent, one costs at least $1k more than the other. Price-wise the Sportlines would be a closer match but IIRC they are only single adjustable? The only problem with Zzyzx is nobody knows just if and when they can get anything from Zzyzx anytime soon, indefinitely.
Both are quality springs. Swift is supposedly lighter... and more expensive. Depends how much you are willing to spend in order to save weight.
tc105n is just as light and siginificantly less expensive
The RE01 are good, but they cost almost as much as Neovas lately, and not do not seem to be $600/set better than the Z1. If you don't feel the need to pony up for Neovas, Z1s are a safe bet. I wouldnt want to pay what is approaching SM 285 r comp tire prices for a 245 street tire that's inferior to the AD07.
Many fast drivers racing both STU and SM who have tried a lot of things to dial their suspensions seem to agree that you should really try to dial in as much as possible by using your spring rates, then address sway bars if necessary for further adjustments afterward. You may not even need them, or maybe just one.
-If its urethane, fits, and and is legal, it's a decent bushing
If you have to use every allowance in the book, sure, but make sure you are tuned for it, and many people are very fast with the stock airbox as it flows very well for STU power levels, and an open element intake can mean higher intake temps.
sure, or any other porting service like MilSpec or PPI
= remarketed ebay unit, but sure
100 or 300 del?. The 100cel may need P0420 cleared once in awhile, but no big deal.
It's light, looks less conspicuous (sound is another story though) and a good value IMO
They are pretty good for the money, and have good initial bite, and probably wont fade for most Solo use. Can be loud and dusty on the street, and eat rotors faster than some other pads. Many people even run less aggressive pads than that in STU
dunno
Yes, but why bother?
Not legal, and once again why bother?
I wouldn't focus on brand names too much personally, and if you are just getting an Evo a few months from now, you might not need to fret over getting every single allowance STU offers, especially all at once.

hokiruu -
thanks for taking the time to give me some great feedback!
i've been following the em sport thread closely, so i am aware of the supply/contact issues with zzyzx of late. as for the ohlins, i'm only looking to buy one set of coilovers so long as i'm autox'ing in this car, so DA is a necessity. i'm a little concerned with the pin breakage issue and subsequent problems people have been having sourcing replacements, so maybe i should be considering the motons as well?
have first hand experience with z1's, and am not willing to spend neova price until i absolutely feel i need a few tenths. with the number of events i run normally, neovas just aren't feasible.
i am also aware of the no-swaybar possibility, but i'll probably pick some up anyway and see what sort of gains/losses i see after spring tuning. of course, as far as springs go, i have no idea what i'm gonna end up with, but odds are i'm gonna start with 10k/12k and go from there.
as far as the perrin mods go, they're there mainly because i'm looking to get as much into the car as the rules will allow from the get-go, get tuned, and never worry about it again. it may seem like overkill, but i have quite a bit of experience with my previous car adding/deleting parts and having to learn how to drive it all over again. this time around, i'm setting it up 100% and focusing on driving/suspension tuning.

The hi-flow cat, technically will be illegal if you throw a CEL and have to either reset the code or use a MIL eliminator. I'm sure regionally/locally it won't matter, I guess it just depends on how serious you are. The pulleys are legal, turbo inlet tube is legal but turbo boost tube probably isn't legal if it is after the turbo.

tires: dunlop direzza z1 *spec 245/40R17
fsb: * no need
rsb: works 24mm / buschur 25mm
bushings: * wait - I run stock ones.
intake: * use and get tuned for any drop-in
exhaust manifold: stock (buschur ported)
o2 housing: buschur
hi-flow cat: perrin / rick jung

turbo-back exhaust: buschur
brake pads: hawk hp+
battery: odyssey pc680mjt * I can help you with a ultra lt. wt. battery kit and pc680
i wasn't sure about these mods - are they STU legal? * skip, plus tubes are not legal
Also add my caster/camber plates and aero for bling.
On a side note, Evos did great at the Wendover ProSolo yesterday! We won AS, 1&2 in STU, and of course BSP. Great to meet everyone out there.

thanks for the tips, rick! congrats on another STU win in wendover, too! i saw you in san diego/el toro, you really seem to have your car dialed in this season! i'll make a point of introducing myself in topeka.
do you still have some of those 100cel cats around? have you had any 0420 issues? i'll definitely be in touch to pick up some parts from ya down the road.

it was a national-level event. AS evos and stis do very well in pros, due to their launch advantage over the s2k/solstice gxp/c4 vette.
