Quote: Sounds like a very personal opinion of yours as well

Have you ever run a set of custom valved & springed set of FA510's? You might be pleasantly surprised
i saw them when they where very shiny when they install them , and i also where there when it was un installed and changed for better...

I dont need to put my hands in the fire to understand it will burn my hand.

If you been around enough suspensions, you can tell by design and material etc what you can except. There are no wonders in racing, period.

Care to elaborate? I just recieved fortune 500's but I only wanted a street coilover. I'm enjoying the discussion.

Btw, I will add to the notion that fortune auto has phenomenal customer service. Literally a 10/10 experience. Their evos are also having podium finishes on their suspension.

for the most part, when you are trying to shave fractions of a second off your lap time, you tend to be a bit picky about what goes on and into your car. every little detail adds up to mean quite a lot in the end.

a "good enough" coil over will NOT suffice. it's REALLY scary going through a technical section of a track when your suspension isn't properly dampened. as such, most of us tend to stick with companies we know and trust. it's no fun to do a track event and come home disappointed in a part you tried but didn't work out.

FA is reasonably priced, but i'm not sure i could take that leap of faith as it would cost me an entry fee, a week's worth of work, two alignments, plus the cost of the suspension itself. maybe if i had a chance to try them first.

however, i have already experienced excellent customer service from Terry at FA. i can definitely vouch for that, so far.

i respect FA for what they do and i will probably wind up with a set on my s200. I have a track friend who runs NASA time trials on a set of their coilovers, and my car is riding on his old ohlins he sold to me to get the FA's.

FA provides a great product, but ohlins has probably 50+ years of R+D behind their dampers.

Ohlins is in F1 and MotoGP among other big time top tier pro race series. Even Ferrari decided to forgo their excellent Magnetorheoligical shocks in favor of Ohlins for their flagship, the La Ferrari.

I admire FA's passion and support for our cars no doubt, and I was decently surprised by the ride quality of their shocks (driven Evo 5, X and FRS), but there is really no comparison between the 2 when you look at the companies as a whole.

I hope no one believes I was trying to do a ohlins vs FA debate as that would be stupid. I like FA for their customer service and support of our platform, but as I mentioned I merely bought them as a quality street coilover. I realize ohlins has a rich history, but as someone who isn't knowledged on suspension I was just curious what makes them so good.
Thanks

FA has a pretty smart marketing approach, and they probably do offer a good suspension package. But just because a shock has been "valved" to order, doesn't mean its good.

What really makes a shock perform well? How good are those adjustment knobs? what are they doing and what are they really adjusting?

FatCat has some awesome Youtube videos explaining everything about a shock and suspension.

Ohlins has the absolute BEST no compromise performance for Street and Track-

During our foray in professional motorsports (back to back ALMS championships in LMP and the like) we ran and did development for Koni, Bilstein, Dynamic Suspension, Ohlins, Penske and so on.... Ohlins was a nice continuation for us into the the EVO market etc...

they work great, have great support, and a long history of excellence-

but-

some people choose to spend less or similar on another product which is fine- the only other we choose is JRZ- or for non production based racing- Penske-

Agreed on most of the FA discussion above. Probably more than adequate for street use and the company seems to be dedicated to doing things well, but Ohlins has such a long track record of R&D and delivering quality parts that it's unreasonable to expect a new, budget entrant to be completely competitive.

I'm curious: How do the JRZ hold up in daily-driven conditions? I chose the Ohlins because my car has to pull double duty and get me to work Monday through Friday. I'm fully confident that the Ohlins can hold up to years of street miles as well, but I hadn't heard much about the JRZs.

The JRZ do a great job- but for the level of performance we are talking (with street use) I prefer the ohlins- especially for the independent rideheight and preload- that goes a long way with us!

Is ohlins THE best or one of the best? Kinda ****ty if the best suspension company stopped supporting our platform. There's no better suspension brand?

Chad- What would be your recommendation for how long between rebuilds on the Ohlins? My car is also my DD so my DFV's have seen ~12,000mi of DD duties and like 13 autocrosses thus far.

Now bare in mind that I am not a pro so this is more for a budget minded folk such as myself. Im **** about maintenance on my car and have spent good $ on quality parts so I want them to last but at the same time don't like throwing away $ where I don't have to.
