2016 STU Discussion!
STU evo drivers (that are still left), thoughts on this?
can't imagine anyone is against it. my thought is, if they allow open boost, I think they should knock back tires 10mm (or whatever) for turbo cars
I don't want "open boost"! I want the rules to be written that way that I can be sure that if I didn't change something on the car that is written as illegal, guy next to me didn't do it either. If I think that is what happened I would like to be able to protest that car and prove that is or isn't true.
"Boost" settings are outside of this and can not be enforced with the way rules are.
So, instead of being there and wondering if that guy is legal or not, or wondering if someone will protest me and I am not going to be able to prove one way or the other, I would rather have rule about the boost that would eliminate that. Because of that, I would like to have "open boost", which is different from wanting "open boost" for the sake of open boost.
With that said, I am willing accept everything else that follows with such a change (there is a list of all potential issues that comes with this) and I see it as less evil than not being able to enforce it in the first place!

Also, that is similar to what I ran my 2G back than...
Thanks man!

to be honest, I'm on the side of open boost, via whatever means. It's the class of common mods, and what do turbo cars do first? intake, exhaust, mbc, and tune. i think the easiest way to balance that is to cut 10mm from the tire allowance. it also hurts the STX applecart even further, where a turbocharged mini just destroyed the rest of a very competitive and mostly N/A field of cars. Gotta do something about it so the most popular class in solo isn't screwed over - easiest way IMO is to cut tire

right, you want open boost, duh. talking about complaining about "my stuff" when you are the one who is repeatedly told off on that forum, is a little ironic

I don't think "if you can't prove it, you have to make it an allowance" is a very good idea. There are plenty of rules that are either impossible or impractical to enforce and we don't turn them all into allowances. I trust the people in the class to build legal cars while we compete to the death for our $5 trophy and anyone who doesn't do that is going to have to live with themselves. This seems like a bogus rationalization to try to argue for the allowance.
I can't see boost in STU changing the endgame much, on concrete at least. We are not talking about a ton of HP compared to what you can get with the rules as-is.

As of the BS turbo car, that is a different category to start with and even though it looks similar on the surface, different problem altogether!

The other part about $5 trophy is much more off! There is much more contingency on line and when combined with alpha personalities, that are in abundance in this sport, that don't like to loose, like ever - I don't think it is enough to keep things on honor system for this. It would be nice if things were different, but at least for me, I don't think they are!
Open boost won't change anything in STU. The EVO on stock boost control hardware doesn't gain much.....and as we know autox is not about power. The sandbox is full of people who pretend to know what they are talking about and a handful of people that have agenda's for whatever reason...here and there you get intelligent people who actually think before they post.....but they don't post very much
lol
lol
So to sum it all up.
- 11/13 spring rates
- Front Brackets/Rear Sway Bar
- 9.5 ET 23/9.5 ET 35 w 265s
- ~ 3 degrees of camber due to plate design/caster needs.
This pretty much sounds similar to my initial plan for 2017 which will be
- 12F/14R
- Ciro Brackets - stock bar F/stock bar R
- 9.75 ET 20 all around with rear rolled on 265s
- I personally will make camber a priority in the front, hoping for -3.5 or more/-1.8-2.2 R
- Some sort of hopefully off the shelf tune to start

lolThere are definitely some people over there who are hurting our collective cause by posting a bunch of nonsense and hyperbole instead of sticking to facts...
I think boost controllers are easily a very common modification for any turbo car - like I said, it's usually intake (air filter), exhaust, boost controller and tune.
I get that it's a slippery slope, and the next thing people will want is clutches.
honestly I think it can be left as-is. only came up cuz Wilcox got protested and either party could prove anything right? doesn't make sense to add more allowance for the car that just stomped the field, because you couldn't prove or disprove he was cheating

I used to believe in the "honor system," but now that I've been around for awhile, nope. You summed it up well.
My two cents on boost, yes, free it up, and also allow mbc changes, nothing beyond that though.
Bye bye clutch.. or I guess we turn it down for the Pros :-/
John Hale shared with me his open boost tune, I'll overlay it with one that I had from a number of years ago, with the vacuum pill removed. From our chatting though, I don't think we'll gain an advantage over the STI, and from the TQ numbers I'm hearing, it could be even worse for us. ....Especially if they keep designing crappy courses like this year's West, F#me runnin.
I still don't get what is the deal with clutches and ST. It is one of the common mods that people will have to do once they increase power and torque on those cars. If cars like GTI for example have barely enough to keep up with stock level power/torque numbers, how would you expect people to install back that same clutch to their (STX, I guess) car, when they know it will be gone pretty quickly. And they are pain to do on pretty much all the cars (well, some are even worse than others).
They also don't have performance benefits for Solo2 (Pro Solo is a different type of sport and its classing is just currently almost identical, but it doesn't have to be). I know that people would add other things in the breakage chain (diff, axles,...), but those are almost impossible to break while in 2nd (or higher) gear, with ST torque/power levels. You would break them pretty much only if you launch the car very hard, but that kind of launch have almost no benefits for typical Solo2 run. Basically, you don't have to do that if you are worried about the rest of the chain!
To me, allowing same type clutches (no twin plates if OEM is single plate for example) as the OEM ones would be of great help for pretty much everyone in ST.
