If I ever graduate from "basic bolt on street evo" I will try out of state options. I started learning about CS/DS cars yesterday lol, might be time to retire into those stock classes. my eyes are going bad anyway lol

I also fixed my "phantom knock" issue. I was planning to replace the knock sensor before I make an insurance claim. while struggling to remove the knock sensor I accidentally tugged the cable and it just came off the sensor. I installed the new one and my car is back to normal. jeez these "expert tuners"
Pretty sure I said there was a wiring issue before that shop put a haltech in your car...

That's what I told him too, specifically the sensor or grounding. I wont have a career if "experts" don't screw up because of their pride. Maybe their arms are too big to fit thru the axle to do a proper swap. Good thing i tried since it was my last weekend to decide if I'm keeping the haltech or starting the insurance claim ("water damage") process
now i'm back where I was 1.5 years ago lol

question! whats the absolute maximum engine oil I can put in with the stock oil pan? seems I'm ok with 5.5 quarts so far with my oil-catch-return-VTA set up. I'm going to try 6 quarts next

You will know when your turbo smokes a bunch because it cant drain back. How much that is, sorta depends on how well your head returns oil Im guessing. But 6qts is around the limit. I know i've always run mine in that 5.5-6qt overfull range.

Thank Dallas. I'm tempted to try that same course layout where I lost 2 motors. But I think I'll shift to 3rd gear this time

You can generally do 1qt over full and be ok.

Like Dallas said, you'll it was too much if the turbo smokes out the exhaust lol

guess I'll have to test it out, maybe 5.75qt. I have this pressure regulating thing in the oil feed line. I'm not sure what it does exactly. hoping the low crankcase pressure helps preserve the turbo seal

it will also produce spectacularly long and long lasting flames from the exhaust on the track..

Is this likely why you lost those engines? Because of knock and the sensor wasn't picking it up?

no. the sensor broke after engine build #2. the CEL comes on immediately. I hate going to these boutique shops because theres a high turnover of technicians. being "warranty work" this time I seem to have gotten their newest guy to install the motor. I addressed some of the issues but I had to let them address issue with the motor/tune. the shop owner tested a different knock sensor without installing it on the block (not sure if he grounded it) before going into haltech sheenanigans. I got about +22HP so we spent more time on it, until I finally got a weekend with my car

I had a couple stray counts of knock at unexpected times last time I did some datalogging. Can't find any indication that the exhaust or other parts are banging around.

I should probably install a new OEM knock sensor just to be safe.

Should I plan on buying the special knock sensor socket tool? Or can it be safely improvised?

I got the whole sensor socket set from HF. cheaper from amazon. IIRC the knock sensor is 27mm. if the axle is out then maybe an adjustable wrench would work

FYI - regarding my trans and 1 and 2 moving/popping out, some of you anticipated the answer, but maybe not necessarily the solution:The retaining snap ring wasn't seated all the way into the output shaft bearing groove but once it snapped into place the shifter stays put. A brisk engagement of the clutch during a 2nd to 1st downshift at about 20mph is all it took
