Surely if it was oil pump failure and no oil pressure for that long it woulda chucked a rod by this point.

Seems like maybe a clearance problem if everything is beat up like that.

when i first bought my evo 14 years ago i spun a big end within a couple days of buying it after an oil change. I drove probably about 100 - 150km wondering what the knacking sound was i could hear before i took it to dealership and found out. only the 1 bearing was hurt. so to see all ur bearings like that i dont think you have just had a spun bearing from low oil pressure.

Besides the data on that IE Sump looks solid. its almost as good as a drysump.

Cmon man, I like build engines and ****. we're not looking for the oil pump to have failed. I'm looking for evidence that it did or didn't go without oil at some point (oil starvation) due whatever reason. These pumps very quickly start chewing up the aluminum housing if there are issues.

right. I will take more pics when i go back. (I think I want to take the IE pan home instead). I saw the pump assembly but didnt inspect the backside (I would love it if the oil pump failed)

with this new motor, they changed oil atleast 3 times (had a broken trans that sounded like a rod knock so engine oil was inspected) . for the last 2 events i changed oil as well. I did 2 attempts trying to figure out an oil leak by the drain/plugs area. it's just like a teaspoon amount per week but since I cleaned and painted the underside of the car & the propeller shaft, the "drips/droplets" are more visible which can be an issue passing tech inspections or even getting on someone's dyno so it bothered me.

I also had normal oil pressures while idling and slight revving after the knock started. I had to test if its the transmission again by pressing the clutch while idling. when I got the car home I removed the valve cover to see if my new cams are "worn down" or if a rocker flew off or if a lifter died. the oil is very clean up there, no scratches on the cams. nothing out of place

Was the pump reused on the rebuild? Oil cooler replaced?

For all of the bearings to show that much damage and the worst of it to be on #1 I would suspect contamination above anything else. Something still had crap in it that didn't get cleaned out.

All new.. Oil cooler from MAP, oil pump assembly, stock crank, bearing, rods, pistons, GSC cams/springs/shaft etc. The block was sent to a specialist. I think only the valve/rockers/lifters/mivec/oil filter housing were reused

Both pump housings and gears. Camshafts, and the camshaft journals in the head, piston skirts. Anything that is an oil lubricated wear surface...

I think what Sean might be getting at, if you had a bearing burn up from lack of oil and it was because of oil pressure loss then you'd certainly see it in more places. 8k rpm will definitely put the rod bearings near the top of loaded components but the first place that you'd see wear is the pump housing because the gears are spiral cut creating side loading.

OK thanks. It is weird my previous motor didnt have this much damage even after driving it around about 1 minute to get back to the grid and also driving it around my block to try to figure it out before getting this engine rebuilt. Anyone for/against the ER pump pulley? I have to confirm if it was installed or not.
On my visit, my time was limited since there were other customers visiting on a Saturday and I really wanted to spend time on our talk.

The ER oil pump gear is a good mod. Slows the pump down instead of relying on the regulator to bypass oil.

All of my race engines get one if they aren't dry sump.

Apologies I forgot to take pics of the piston skirts and crankshaft. everything still has oil and I didnt clean them in order to have the best view of the condition of the surfaces. the block was on the rotisserie/stand with the crank shaft so flipping it around to take pics was a bit of effort. It still have plenty of oil flowing down after flipping it. the bearing surfaces on the crank looks like the least-worst bearing on those rods

I should have cleaned it first. but this is still good, no damage on the cylinder walls and piston skirt

The oil pump was still assembled for some reason. i turned it and it feels like some vacuum - meaning it doesnt free wheel when you spin it. no shaft play, no friction

the pic looks bad but its just the oil dripping and reflection. It looks fine aside from metal bits scratching the housing wall. I can take pics again later

about contamination, the oil filter is there to clean the oil. are we talking about debris from #1 bearing moving to 2/3/4
