I guess thats between you and the shelter. the places I talked to were pretty selective about where they placed their dogs. Almost worse then adopting a child. If you had a small yard, weren't home often or had other pets they were hesitant to let you adopt. I'm fine with that since I'm very selective about the type of dog I want in my house

the plus side is that you get a great dog that you know the history of, not some inbreed pet store dog that spend the first part of its life in a cage. I also had the option of returning her if she didn't get along with the rest of the family. And instead of paying a grand or more at a store you're paying a $50 adpotion fee.

Quote: There is no way im putting up a fence. We have had big dogs my whole life and never fenced one. Im a fence hater
Why dont you capture one a deer and keep it as a pet. You can teach it to lure in other deers!

I'd love to adopt a dog, but dont have the time for one. The site that Mike posted up yesterday looks really good.

I got my German Shepherd from a rescue I volunteered at, and she's been just great- I've never had a more loyal dog, everything she does reeks with 'tell me I'm good, oh God won't you tell me how good I am?" She wants nothing more than to make her people happy. The only problem is, she gets so excited when she's playing that she doesn't watch where she's going and hangs her mouth wide open- I've had her whack me in the head with an open mouth and **** that hurts! lol

german shepherds definately have sharper teeth. my mother has both a german shepherd and a golden retriever. goldens are bred to have soft mouths because they were hunting dogs and weren't supposed to mangle the kill that they fetched. german shepherds were bred to bite! definitely a difference when playing rough with either one.

i hate when the german shepherd lunges for a toy in your hand and jams its teeth in. combine that with frozen hands in the winter weather, ouch.....feels like you smashed your finger with a hammer.

we're looking at puppies that are like 6 weeks old and still with their mother. so emotionally that will be better than pet store dogs. we just got to check out to see if there is any inbreeding going on.

I understand why they are selective, but thats my problem. I have a huge yard way to big to fence the whole thing. Fencing a portion of the yard is like a big tease. Im never home, but I would take the dog to work with me. So its always around different dogs/ people everyday so that throws up red flags. It wouldnt be on any schedule, hell i might leave it at work some nights.

Either way I wont go to a store

The deer come everynight like clockwork. No need to capture one

Quote: Josh, we've got a pit bull too, her name is Avery and she is awesome. Best dog I've even owned. so obeident and loyal and they are great with people/kids. we should all bring our dogs to the next meet... I guess that means I'd have to go to one then.
She also can't hold her stomach in a car. No f'n way is she taking a ride in the Evo. My beagle is awesome in a car though and super well behaved so he would be good to go.
EVERYONE acted like I had just bought a monster when we got her, but I eventually learned to just call her by the right name which is an American Staffordshire terrier. They just look at you and nod unknowingly. She's a great dog but has 0 agility or sense of size. Runs into walls, trips all over things and tries to squeeze into places that she clearly won't fit into.

Quote: josh, i like pitbulls. that may have to be my second dog though since my wife would require some convincing. plus she wants a golden....well she likes small dogs too so the choice is golden retriever or bichon frise (i f'ing hate those things along with all small dogs).
I've had many goldens and golden mixes. They're on of the most lovable dogs you can get. The only issues we ever had were hip displacia and they HAVE to be underfoot all the time.

Come on, now Josh- I thought it was cool. I also had to stop Kim from running out and acquiring one for herself. That girl of mine picks up animals like most girls pick up shoes!

And at least yours is a puppy- mine is 3 years old and still runs into walls and thinks she's a lapdog.

I have a Black Standard Schnauzer, my next dog will either be a giant schnauzer or an irish wolfhound.. Here at KHC the owners brother breeds AWESOME rottweilers and there are always a few here at the shop everyday but he gets top dollar for them from customers in germany..
Here is some pics of my dog Brodie, don't see black standards very often

Schnauzers are great dogs... The wife really likes them.

Jeff if your serious about a Rottie I'll find out the name of the breeder my sister got her's. She is a petsitter (thats right, walks dogs for a living) been doing it for about 18yrs, so she knows all the do's and don'ts as far as pets go.... ie where to go for a vet, breeder, all that fun stuff.

Hey, I'd never knock petsitting- I've seriously considered quitting my job and doing that full time. I've had everything from hamsters to horses, so I'm generally comfortable with taking care of anything. We live in an area where people pay through the nose for pet care, but try telling one of the regular places you have a snake room in your house and you need someone to check on the while you're away

That's what Andrea did when we first started dating. She made a killing some months but struggled others.

pete i may have to partake in your sister's knowledge/services. we were planning on getting a dog sitter to come once a day while we were at work. at least while it was still a puppy. do you think she knows of good breeders in the area for golden retrievers?

I can certainly ask for you... as far as her services, I think your to far out for her to be honest. She mostly does Exton, Chester Springs, Eagle... Don't think she could fit T-dale into the route. She may be able to give me a name of someone else though.
