Philadelphia's Classiest Drunkards
I spent about two hours playing in the snow last night, and about 45min this morning. I used to covet snow tires, but my five year old half tread Avon's haven't failed me yet. I also kind of feel like Blizzaks would hinder my ability to power oversteer, and generally slide around.
My non-ABS RS brakes usually locks up very easily in the snow, but last night I was actually stopping very easily. It took a little more effort to slide the car as well. The snow seemed to have above average traction.

ha!
I find the somewhat fluffy stuff in mild accumluation offers very good traction. Also packed snow that has not yet turned to ice is great as well, if not better.
Heavy or slushy snow makes the car hard to direct. Powdery stuff is like baby powder, great for drifting, but no brakes!. Too much accumulation goes right to my windsheild, lol.

I think that I mentioned last week that my windshield wipers four settings were low-low-low-high. After that first day it has only happened once since then. This morning my washer jets decided that they wanted to spray by themselves. They only sprayed at about half strength, but they kept going until the washer bottle was empty. This makes me think that maybe the problems lies within the stalk switch, but when I disconnected the washer pump in the trunk there was a bit of corrosion on the connector. It was blueish so it definitely came from me spilling washer fluid on it, but maybe that had something to do with it?
I'm still under warranty. If it's only happening sporadically, I'd be surprised if the dealer would do anything with it.
Kenny, I've never driven on snow tires. I feel that my all-seasons balance between traction and no traction make them a lot of fun.
Beer Edit: There was some talk recently about beer events. I just got an email about one of my favorite Philly beer schindigs. It's called Brewers Plate. The idea is that they pair local restaurants and local breweries together. At each station you get a bit of beer and a bit of food. The restaurants make a dish that goes well with the brewery designated beer they are paired up with. I'm not talking about pizza and wings either. They generally have some VERY decent food. It does get a bit packed, but this one is well worth the price of admission, and the lines you may face.

also, mashing the throttle and powering out of a turn with a mild slip angle is more fun to me than feathering the throttle and sliding all over the place.
but it would be nice to get nice drifts at slower speeds.

Something about that makes me feel funny.
Agreed. Snow Driving Lesson #1 Don't slam on the brake
Agreed. With great power comes great responsibility.
Yeah, morning traffic with School buses and moms about I sit back and turn up the music.

i have a real problem with people thinking their cars and sometime skills are so good that they can glue themselves to your bumper on a backroad in the snow.
while you believe snow tires and awd will lessen your risk of crashing into something or someone it is also your responsibility to see that it doesn't happen and recognize all potential risks before you destroy your's and some else's personal property.
that's my feeling on the matter. tearing up a snow covered parking lot is great but wrc'ing your way past soccer moms on a thursday morning isn't so much. perhaps i'm still very bitter since it took $15k to fix my brand new evo 2 winters ago due to the lack of foresight on some mouth-breather's part.
good thing i like my car so much because i'll get killed financially if i tried to sell it or trade it in.

I agree man. Even though people do some really dumb things, my rule is that if your driving even a bit aggressive or going faster than the crowd, whatever happens is your fault. You have to leave lots of margin.
That's why trying to have fun in the snow can be so frustrating. I'll only pass someone if it is safe to do so. If there is anyone walking around, its back to normal speeds for me! I would like to see a bit more courtesy from people that dont bother buying snow tires, but given the amount of horrible things people do to each other around the world, its not really worth getting worked up over
