I got an electric guitar and amp
Always wanted one, but my Dad used to say that he'd "break my fingers if I ever got one- now go outside and skate" (yes...I have issues)Anyway, I can't play (read music) so I've been mimicking chords by ear from the latest Superchunk CD.....

My 10-year old daughter picks it up and pulls out her chello music and can play real songs.....sad
I can only play when the wife is out of the house....apparently turning up the gain and creating more distortion to mask my incompetence with a musical instrument is an acquired taste

Nice

The guitar is a Fernandes Ravelle X (basic model). It was a spur of the moment deal $68.00 from Music 123 on closeout.
Picked up small 20 watt amp and guitar "kit" that came with a video of a hippie teaching you how to play guitar....not a big fan of hippes, so I might try something else to learn

i took lessons when i was 14 for about a year which was a good way to get a grasp on the basics, but i picked up the most just jamming with friends or sitting around figuring out songs by myself. it helped that my favorite type of music is punk, so most of the early songs i learned only contained 3 - 4 power chords.
one absolutely indispensable piece of gear that i have is my BOSS TU-2 tuner. i love BOSS effects pedals as a general rule and have several of them, but the tuner is by far the one that gets the most use.
currently i am rolling with 4 guitars. i've had and sold (including these 4) almost a dozen over the last 14 years of playing, and i have always regretted every one that i have gotten rid of.

from left to right and back to front:
fender standard telecaster in natural ash, added the black pick guard and exchanged the bridge position pickup for a dimarzio tone zone humbucker.
my blue lotus with all the stickers. this was my first "real" guitar even though it was a cheapie. it's still around because of how old it is and the fact that the shows i played when i was younger were played with it. i stole the humbucker from the bridge for my strat.
fender standard stratocaster. dimarzio super distortion pickup in the bridge position, added the cream colored pick guard, knobs, and pickup covers.
applause electric acoustic. it's a cheapie, but it's a tough guitar and sounds decent.
other guitars that are no longer with me: 1976 fender music master bass, fender precision bass in kelly green, fender jazz bass, fender duo sonic, fender jaguar in 3 color sunburst, a different applause acoustic, and one or two others time has forgotten.

Impressive collection My musical taste is exactly like yours, and it's funny that you can pick up some of the basic chords just by "searching" around the guitar. I pulled out some old Ramones CD's and last week and "almost" got through a Blitzkrieg Bop!

I have a basic tuner that came with the kit (close enough for my level) and luckily the guitar holds the tune pretty well (as confirmed by my mother-in-law a 45 year music teacher)

staying in tune is one of the biggest problems i have had with some of my less expensive guitars. that lotus in particular is notorious for slipping out of tune while playing, and also not being able to hold intonation (what i jokingly call 'tuna fish') to save it's life.Originally Posted by goforwand

I beg to differ. He clearly is wearing a racing suit that says "Rockstar". Race car in the background. He's a RaceStar. The cool hand signs are also a dead give away. Only Rockstars and Racecar drivers can pull that off
