Head should be done in the next week (before assembly). Head and valves will then be sent to Swaintech to get the combustion chambers, valve faces and exhaust ports coated.
Here is what a valve job looks like on a high-end Newen machine

Great build. I love watching people build to this level. Everyone has their own unique ideas and I get to spectate and cherry pick them for my own build.
I used to run the full gates kit. I found it to be noisier than OEM. It might have been the timing belt alone....but something in there made it louder when running through the RPMs. I switched to all OEM hardware on the next T-belt service and all was quiet again.

BTW you should get that oil return port opened up. Ideally it would have been good to do before having the heads decked. Opening it up is part of the common oiling fixes. Ie. baffled pan, balance shaft delete, and kiggly HLA. Since your build is max effort, throw in ER modded secret sauce oil pump, proper crank case venting, and maybe moroso oil accumulator.

I'll have him do the oil port mod when I get the head back from Swain Tech.
As for oil mods, I'm getting the ER oil gear and I have an ER modified MIVEC gear. The accumulator is one race car step I'm not willing to make with this car...at least not yet. It would add cost and I'd want it wired so that I woulnd't have to manually turn off the pump each time before I shut off the car. And I'd have to add a relay to do that. Maybe simple for some, but I have enough to worry about right now lol. If I took it on the track more than a couple times a year, I'd consider it.
Is there some other secret sauce mod I'm missing? I have a baffled oil pan (no pics yet, it's still being secret sauced) and I have the Kighly HLA. Thinking about getting this kit for the engine:

I've decided to keep the balance shafts, but in order to limit issues I'll be using upgraded ACL bearings plus I'll have both the bearings and friction surfaces on the BS that face the bearings WPC treated. That plus the ER oil gear is as good insurance you're gonna get while still combating NVH. I'm trying to keep the beast civil.
If anything ever happens due to a BS, you'll see me curse to high heaven and I'll swear I'll never use a balance shaft again lol

Looks like you got your oiling bases covered Erik. Those catchs cans....ain't that some slick shyte!
I have respect on your decision on the BS. I went back and forth over that myself. My evo is now basically 50:50 street/track and probably going more track in the next couple years. So my focus is a bit different.
Please post details on your MIVEC swap too. I'm doing the same, already have all the parts and I think I have all the info needed to do it. But I'll let you go first and work out the issues that may come up.
Whats your ecu solution btw?

did away with it on the 8 and then realized their mistake. That also requires a different lower rad hose. The Evo 9 water pump is different (and extra bolt into the Evo 9 head), and there is a bracket on the Evo 9 thermo housing that is different than the 8. I don't know what that different bracket means yet, because I haven't tried bolting everything back together lol.For the ECU, I am just swapping in a 9 ECU. I will pull my immobilizer code from my 8 ECU and then go from there. 9 has a little bit more definition than the 8. I will be doing the FlexFuel option as well that TSComp and ER offer.

SpeedSport single plate carbon/carbon clutch. Don't want any twin disc rattle. That would make me want to punch myself in the face...especially since my DD is now a 335i. BMW is smooth. Holds 600 torque. Deciding between aluminum flywheel and steel. If I go steel, I may have a machine shop lighten it a little bit. Supposedly aluminum will transfer a lot of gear noise, but I need someone to quantify that for me. The gear noise the Evo already has, I kinda like

Yup. Tom and Aby used to work together back in the day. If I understand things correctly, Tom got Aby his first job at Cosworth a long time ago. I think they also worked together at Nissan racing in the 90's. Aby recommended Tom, and after getting the head back, I can see why. I also learned that the valve job is one of the most important things when doing a head, and the Newen machine is the gold standard for that.

There is some talk about it in this thread:

I'm trying to arrange to swing by and take a picture of the clutch.
man that head looks too nice to use. top notch works from those guys. I wouldnt worry about the oil drain back porting. the kiggly hla was created for the early 4g63 DSM engine. the early engines have only three restricted drainback holes. the evo 4/9 came with like nine huge ones. if you have the pleasure of comparing the two its mind boggling. the early evos 1/3 came with factory HLA regulator. kiggly got the idea for his from that. the factory regulator dumps the oil in the head, kigglys does not. otherwise they work the same at regulating the oil pressure to the lifters to prevent over pumping. the 4/9 didnt come with one. nor did any american market 4g63. you have to ask why.
