Ok. Finally some progress.

Got my SpeedSport Carbon/Carbon clutch. Flywheel is steel but friction surface is carbon...in fact, every friction surface is carbon. This should be able to take a lot of abuse. Flywheel is heavy though...like 20 pounds heavy. OEM is approx 15 or so. They have an aluminum option at like 10 pounds, but plenty of smart people have said avoid the lightweight version. However, after putting so much effort into making the whole assembly lightweight, I am reticent to throw such a heavy piece of metal on the end of the crankshaft. Thoughts? It looks pretty though

Getting the assembly balanced here. Recommended by Ed Pink Race Engines.

So, after getting everything balanced, she'll be ready for assembly (FINALLY). Yay!!!

Those are lighter. Here are the weights. Clutch disc is super light.

The Stock Evo8

Pressure Plate : 12.2 lbs
Clutch Disc : 4 lbs
Stock Flywheel : 13.2 lbs
Total : 31 lbs Bolted together

SpeedSport

Pressure Plate : 8 lbs
Clutch Disc : 1.2 lbs
Flywheel: says 20.5 lbs on an innaccurate scale. Taking into work tomorrow. But it's definitely heavy.
Total : Was told ~29 lbs Bolted together by SpeedSport

dont second guess . light fly is the worst thing you can do for an awd car. use it. you will be pleased. I run 33.5lbs in my ultra light 2500lb car. and the car launches/shifts/drives flat amazing.

Yep. To light is most definitely a bad thing.

To light and the car will not be as smooth, and will need to rely on electronics to keep rev's high for smooth shifting. You don't want your RPM's dropping to fast.

All that matter is that the assembly is a bit lighter. You don't want to go too light as Jerry and Tom have said. I'm sure it will be fine with that weight.

How do you like the clutch? Can you compare drivability to any other clutch?

Ok. Phew. FInally getting close to short block assembly.

Got my oil pump gears back from WPC. Has any other Evo owner done this? Looking forward to see how smooth and easily the engine runs

Also, got some ARP flywheel bolts and a Cosi balance shaft belt (I'm keeping my BS, but have done about as much as anyone can to ensure they don't seize up...including upgraded BS bearings AND had the BS and BS bearings WPC treated). That, short of the ER gear is about as much as I can think of to make sure the BS don't go kaput. And I think I'll enjoy the smoother ride. I don't enjoy sqeaky/noisy race car rides on the street.

Looking good! I'm guessing I know the type of fueling and tune you're going to be running now?

Wow, nice stuff. I really think the thoroughness of this engine build!

I want to hear more about the WPC treatment. It seems like it doesn't get used enough by people.

E85. 30-35 psi on the street, depending on what the car likes.

Well, the point of my build is threefold:

1) Lighten the assembly
2) Reduce friction
3) Contain/control heat

So, any kind of friction surface will have been treated in some way. Oil pump gears and shaft, bearings (main, thrust, bs), balance shafts, crankshaft and piston rings are WPC treated. Cams will be too. There's a moly coating on the piston skirts and I'll be putting a Techline coating on the cylinder walls.
