Alright, You are making progress & wrenching

Read the directions on that rust remover. Just make sure its not going to attack the rubber boots & the driveline carrier bearings etc

Different look at mystery cable. Sensor maybe?
Eww.

Much better but still not quite perfect and not entirely sure what to. So I ordered some lamb wool things(went to 4 stores and no one stocks them) so hopefully when they show up they'll do the job I want.

20$US for part, 35$US for shipping...stupid borders!

After 3 days in rust remover, hit with scaler after(not the gears)

Came out nice I think.

Haha, thanks but I feel like a peasant with all the deep pocket parts everyone else is throwing on! Good learning experience though, that's for sure. I'm real close to cracking the egg open and re-stacking the plates...just gotta watch a couple more videos that make it look like any clown can pull it off

Okay, I could use some serious wisdom here. I was just slowly spinning the diff after paint and it made a subtle sort of grind-y noise when switching direction. This made me nervous so I popped the back and found some black residue and wear on the...pinion gear mounting plate/diff housing I believe. Sorry I'm not exactly sure what stuff is called! Anyway it's all gotta get cleaned no matter what but I need to know if the gear/housing is garbage due to balance issues or anything.

Black goo. Oil was reasonably clean when drained but this is scary to me.
It's not much but that edge been rubbing on something. Teeniest of edges when you run a finger along it.

What's your favourite DIY diff options? Sending to rebuild is not in the budget for at least a year.

Depending on mileage and maintenance, the diff carrier tapered roller bearings, and especially the pinion shaft tapered rollers are the ones that wear. They are relatively cheap and easy to replace with the right bearing puller rented from your local auto store. You will need a shim set and a dial gauge to reset the tooth contact pattern, and some patience to set the preload on the pinion shaft bearings. While you are in there check the friction plates and spider gear carrier as they can sometimes crack. Lastly replace all the seals!

Oh yeah, after about 20hrs of buffing they all look like this. Tails are better because less road damage and I didn't want to take the 1mm of material to get em better. 3M for the works once my cheap Ebay heat gun arrives.

Plastic bits all scrubbed and cleaned and no longer smelling funky AF
Garbage pic but it's the very first bit to officially get swapped over!

Upper management. So serious.
Going back out tomorrow and with a pile of luck will have interior swapped over by Monday. Long weekend here and this is what I'm up to. Getting pumped to swap my first engine in a field!

Some stuff that looks like other stuff because it's all pretty much the same...but oh so sweetly different!

That took some sleuthing to get swapped over!
How dashing...

So I get the dash harness swapped and couldn't for the life of me remember WTF these were for and spent I kid you not 3 hours freaking out trying to grok what they're for...HVAC FFS.

So I got a good deal on the Whiteline sway bar kit and it is on the way.
One thing I really need to know but can't find a solid answer for is total engine weight. I can find component weights but not for assembled engine and I need to know if a 1tonne shop hoist is beefy enough to do my heart transplant.
Also have a few other things trickling in...

In case I botch removal of usable OEM sensor from wreck

So cheap and going back together oughta be a bit breezier this way.

Why dick around?
My work busy season should die off here in the next 2 weeks so the hoist thing is a big deal as it'll be swap time chicken louie! So yeah, 1 tonne is enough, right?

I’m not sure if it was previously mentioned but you should use tape and label each wire you disconnect .
