Dumb question but I searched and couldn't find a clear answer in the forums: Flashing the ECU is the same thing as using an EMS to tune your car. The difference being that if you own an EMS, you can tune your car whenever you want as long as you know how to tune it. Right?

Here's another dumb question - How do I lobby to get Idaho Falls in your region since we are closer to you than anyother location! Granted, there are only about 5 Evos that I know of in all of Eastern Idaho so maybe it's no big deal...ROFL!!!!
Flashing the ECU and a standalone EMS are only functionally similar. Everything else is very different.
Flashing the ECU is using a computer program to break into the code on your factory ECU and reprogramming it. Only a paid tuner can do this. It uses a program called Techtom, or ECUTek, and cost money each time the tuner comes to change something. It works great for basic mods and the stock turbo, but not so great on big turbos.
A standalone system like the AEM EMS replaces the whole factory ECU. You are no longer OBD-II compatible, but you are 100% in control of everything. If you don't know what you are doing this is very bad. You control timing, boost, fuel, and all the biases based on sensor input. You have to make you car run at idle, part-throttle, and full throttle. All from "scratch". It's not easy, but it gives you the control that "tuner" want.
The UTEC is a piggyback system that makes adjusments to the signals coming into the factory ECU. This allows you to change timing and fuel, but the effects are less consistant then a true standalone.

a stand alone will make you want to tear your hair out until you get it right.
then it is a work of art
best mod ever
VP c-16 & AEM EMS
i heard motec now has a plug and play EMS system for the evo
If that was the best mod EVAR... then all that stroker, built head, and monster turbo is over-rated I guess.
Scott you should stuff yourself into those birds and make it a SCOTURDUKEN!
