Thats a good question I don't think it supplies the engine with enough damping to cause a harsh twisting of the engine. Remember it's still mounted.

Companies like Ingals and J's Racing have been using these for quite a while now.
Almost always just one side of the engine.

Lancer Drivetrain Damper

WoRkZ -

The determinant for locating where the damper goes is where under the hood is a solid piece of real estate to mount the non-engine end to. On the Evo, it's the shock tower, which would be the preferred location for any car.
The reason that one works just fine is that at least with my shock absorber, the resistive force isn't enough to do anything crazy like twist the block. Blocks are designed to be way stiff in torsion. The way things are now, the tranny is trying to twist the engine off the engine mount on the other end of the motor, so actually the damper will modulate that effect some.
