I thought I'd be screwed having cams. I'd say you're good to go.

I recommend taking it to South Coast.

Take the MBC off. Then take it to the dealer.

Update to my madness....

My car is in for the 3rd time at the dealership. 1st they replaced the idler pulley. The noise was gone only for about 2 days. I am assuming they lubricated the belts which is why the noise was gone. The second time I brought it in they replaced the timing belt. The noise was gone now for another 2 days.... Same reasoning I believe.... Now they are going to replace the tensioner which he believes the noise is coming from. He said he had his Evo specialist come in to evaulate this issue and he was certain that it was the tensioner. Mind you after the first two times I took my car there the noise got louder and louder. They have had my car for 3 days now, and I am gettign it back tomorrow. I will udpate you all if this resolves my issue. If not I am going to get a lawyer and file a lemon law act against mitsubishi for selling a car with a noise that will degridate the sale of the car!!! I love my car but can't stand this damn noise!!!!

Updates? Hopefully we can get a definitive answer since it seems that there are a number of different fixes that "work".

take a log screwdriver and put it on one belt driven component at a time and listen. the loudest one is the bad one.

i got the tbelt tensioner replaced under warranty. 1mo later the noise returned with a vengence. returned it to dealer but they couldnt duplicate it.

i have a theory that this is related to water getting in a bearing. i realized this occurred after washing engine bay. anyone else experiencing a correlation??

Smile Fixed!

So after replacing the pullies, and then the belt, I still had the same noise. I was going crazy so i took it in again to Mitsubishi. I went to the Glendale Mitsubishi in Cali who was aware of this issue. They replaced the timing belt bracket and timing belt again and now the noise is goine. 300 miles and no noise. Not guaranteeing that it wont come back but for now it is good to go. I think the bracket was the solution. He said it was bent! The part number on my invoice is:

FP-Number 1145A038 (Belt, Valve Timing)

FP-Number 1091A133 (Bracket, Cylinder)

These replaced made the noise go away. Hope this helps and good luck to all!!! I know how frustrating this noise is to all of you. Try having these replaced and let me know how it goes!!! GOOD LUCK!

I asked Mistu to replace or buy back my car but they said no. I lost interest in my car from all the times I have taken it to the dealer.

My car history:
14.6K, 09/29/07, Told dealer about engine noise . They don't hear it. At Long Beach Dealer
18.3K, 01/30/08, 1st attempt to fix engine noise. At Long Beach Dealer
21.8K, 04/28/08, 2nd attempt to fix engine noise. At Long Beach Dealer
30.0K, 02/04/09, Called Mitsu. Rep was sent to dealer, no problem was found. At Long Beach
31.7K, 03/21/09, Check engine light (random misfire), code cleared. At Long Beach
31.8K, 04/03/09, 3rd attempt. Engine noise fixed. Ck engine light cleared again. At Glendale
32.4K, 04/16/09, Check engine light. Change spark plugs and cleaned injectors. At Glendale
33.4K, 05/18/09, Check engine light. Mitsu engineers worked on car. They concluded that I used fuel additive. They cleaned valves and they told me the car has fixed.
33.8K, 06/01/09, Check engine light. Same code random misfire. I refused to leave car at dealer.
I requested to have mistu replace my car, lemon law. They said no because the engineers concluded that I used a fuel additive. I have never used a fuel additive and my only mod is a muffler.
