You need to fix your preload.

He is referring to me... FWIW MAP is now cutting the rod and adding additional threads to the turbosmart actuators before they leave house but I doubt they are adding preload as that is kinda up to the new owner. The good news is that its very easy to add preload even with everything in the car.

Pull the retaining clip, slide the rode off the WG flapper, adjust the eyelet for at least a half of eyelet hole preload then use a vice grips to reseat the rode onto the flapper. This will only take you 15 minutes tops.

After you add some preload your boost will be significantly better. Don't run it hard till you fix the preload as it's not good to overspin turbos.

For the pre-load discussion, was there a design change in that area in comparison to the old and new version of the EF turbos? I ask as I have the first version of the EF4 with a 2.4L and it seems awfully laggy when I compare it to the new version of the EF4. I believe when Archie installed the turbo, it was not pre-loaded.

On another note, I believe I have found the limits of what I consider an enjoyable power limit for my turbo. I am making about 515whp and an impressive 470wtq at 32PSI. The only thing that bothers me is the power band which I believe will be greater with a smaller turbo such as the EF3. I think this would be perfect for how I use the EVO as I can really only enjoy it while going in a straight line. If one of you EF3 fellas are looking to make more power and wished you purchased an EF4 from the beginning, send me a PM as we can discuss a straight up trade if you are interested.

What your forgetting Lavar is they did make changes to the turbo itself. Being we have the first series of them they are gonna seem laggy. If yours seems laggy with a 2.4 then I would hate to see what you say about getting in my car. Downgradeing to an ef3 with your current setup in my opinion would be a bad idea.

Brian, my friend. I know how I drive the car and I want to enjoy it better than holding the steering wheel in a straight line and yelling "banzai". Although I love that feeling, I want a turbo that can achieve my power goals (500whp+) and have a great powerband. My EF4/2.4LR combination is great but the EF3 turbo will give me a greater powerband overall.

I have an EF2 and you are right, it does "scream" and I've heard others describing their EF series as such too. But, mine screams at higher boost though, probably 15+ psi going up. I'm running 31-32psi top, and it does feel fast when it screams. I'm still battling with some logging issues right now coz both my 1byteload and WGDCCorr are showing up "0" only...

As long as it is an ok sound it's low boost and only in partial throttle.

I did and now I am kicking myself in the butt. I thought 600whp+ would keep a smile on my face. I have surely experienced 500whp+ and 470wtq and it is plenty. The EF4 is a monster.

How would you know if you need to add more preload? Could you pressure test the wg actuator and test at what psi the flapper starts to open? What would be the specs to look for? I have an EF3 w/ the turbosmart actuator. I purchased mine maybe a month or so ago so Im not sure if mine has the updated rod.
