Turbos definately spool faster when there are less restrictions around it. The higher numbers may lead to setups that are more responsive. I have a friend using the 4" e-bay core with a 3076 turbo. The 3076 in my experience is the laggiest turbo out there. On his car the turbo is very fast spooling. The free flowing intercooler may have something to do with it.

Unfortunately the higher flow number in this test can mean just larger cooler so there is no way to tell if the core is flowing well for its size or it is just big on the inside with more channels to fill. On car performance is what we need to see. I was doing this mostly for fun and to give you guys some hope that a real test is actually going to happen.
1) If heat is constant then an intercooler that has greater flow, has less "time" to act as a heat sink and "cool" the air charge produced by the turbo and the temp at the intake would be higher then with an intercooler that has lesser flow.

2) An ic with higher flow may make more hp, but only where the air temps are "controlled" by meth injection/water injection where an ic with lesser flow would require more psi to make the same power.

Anyone???

์Not necessarily true. Air flow is based on engine needs. A freer flowing IC means that the IC causes less back pressure, and back pressure makes the turbo work harder which lowers engine efficiency for several reasons.

The key parameters to measure are pressure drop across the IC and temperature reduction across the IC. Its pretty hard to do this on a bench top though because it requires somewhere in the range of 50 hp to generate typical flow and boost pressure of an engine at high output.

With that said, I'm kinda thinking that the big blue snail fan might be suitable enough to draw some conclusions. The key would be finding something that can heat the air being drawn into the fan.

I've just got a quick question about the flow since we don't know how the heat transfer will be affected.

I noticed I.D./O.D. of the inlet/outlet of the end tanks appear to be different in size. Is it possible since you are testing the flow (with a fan) under a low pressure condition that the sizes may come into play when getting your readings? Also, isn't possible the inlets/outlets might be the restriction and not necessarily registering what the "core" is capable of flowing (since the test is conducted under a low pressure condition)?

Can you measure the inlets of each core (I.D.)?

I tested the fan with airmeter only (813hz). And then with the coupler (804hz). The coupler was reducing to 2.5 opening. There was a loss of flow of 9hz. This clearly shows the size of openings on the coolers is not more than 9hz but likely smaller.

I am going to do some more testing by blowing through IC pipes alone to see what the flow losses are through IC pipes of different sizes and bends.

Just wondering...........you imply you are testing our Race FMIC, it is not pictured in your row of intercoolers you have posted on page 21, do you not have one yet?

There was great independent testing just done on the Ebay intercooler too. Proved what I have already said about it. Not sure if all of you guys who are interested in test results have seen it or not.

NYT = not yet tested.

I stated from the beginning I was doing this test to gain knowledge for myself. Not really any other reason. Its really hard sometimes to filter through the crap because there is a lot of it. Here is an example.

A really respected tuner tests his best intercooler against an inexpensive ebay core with 25% less core area. The e-bay core tests poorly with temp control, but only looses 10whp on a well setup car. 640whp drops to 630 on a low reading dyno and this is without a retune to compensate for higher intake temps.......An independent does a similar back to back and picks up 100hp from intercooler swap. WOW. Dont know whoes shovel is bigger but just goes to show its very hard to filter through the crap sometimes.

Intercooler needs when injecting meth is gonna be different than when running straight gas. If running straight fuel the best possible heat reduction is going to be the winner. When injecting meth the intercooler that flows the best should produce the best hp.

About the intercoolers selected for this test. Every intercooler in this test has a core from a different manufacture. I dont see the point of testing the same cores with slightly different endtanks. Example: I dont see the point in testing the spearco core when the slowboy core uses the exact same core. Some venders offered to send me their cores for testing but would not disclose which core they were using so I declined their offer. I dont want an intercooler to arrive only to find the core was already in the test. Plus I feel there is a good chance some venders are using the same cores that are available through e-bay but dont want to disclose this for obvious reasons.

I agree there is no reason to test two identical cores with different end tanks.

That is not what I asked, I also now what NYT meant. I see you have our race intercooler listed to test. I also saw a long line of intercoolers in the picture you took. I was simply asking if you have one of our race FMIC's or not to test?

Hey Dave, send me one of your RACE cores, I am willing to test it for a couple of years on my IX and I'l let you know the results and my feelings. Be sure to send a Lower IC pipe too for a Stock IX turbo. PM me for mailing instructions and I can pick up shipping if you'd like
