Evo 8 or Evo 9 first gear for drag?
I keep seeing info about the "ultimate ratio" transmissions: Evo 9 1st Evo8/9 2nd, Evo 8 3rd/4th, Evo 9 5th.
I'm trying to gain an understanding as to which first is better for Drag. Wouldn't the Evo 8 higher gearing give you quicker launches and put less strain on the clutch/drivetrain? Sure you'd get a few more mph from the 9 first, but I am thinking from a launching standpoint, and from the numbers, I would imagine that an 8 first gear would be easier to launch than a 9.
Someone humor me.

Depends on your power, may EVOs spin thru the 9 first gear effortlessly either way, on some though its the perfect ratio to just hook in first.
In some cases a longerfinal drive means less shifting and therefore a lower ET.
It really depends on the car and what your looking for, but its a good option for many to get the longer 9 ratio.

i have the evo8 5 speed trans and i was thinking at some point to swap my 1rst gear and 5th to 9th 1rst and 5th gears, but i didn't see its worth the money since i don't do 1/4 miles, just friendly drags.

I think if you are stock or have minimal mods the Evo 8 1st gear is good because it helps you get off the line quicker. If you are making a lot of power the Evo 9 1st gear is better because the tires wont break loose as easy and you wont hit the red line as quickly. I know for me 2nd gear comes very quick at the power Im at now. Good for the street but not at the strip.
Evo 9 first gear is longer by 2% guys! Evo 8 AND 9 have same 2nd gear. Use Evo 8 4th gear since it's longer, and JDM Evo 5th gear since it is a closer ratio to 4th.
