Yeah I bought it complete from FP since the evo is my DD. I figured it would have the dual flapper like the earlier in the thread.

A local guy does ceramic, but I'm not impressed with his. I did a set of pistons. Ran them for 100 miles and you could barely tell.
ceramic coated pistons?? Do they just do the tops or something?

Oh no, my hot side looks like an old sidewalk already. I just didn't pay $2400 (or however much) for it.
My goals were in the low 400s on 93, as instant spool as possible, for the least amount of money. I think the HTA71 is right where I need to be with S2s.. They may be overkill on it though.

Also, cryotreating is super cheap. Like $40 to $60. Can't hurt, right? THat's what I tell myself when I continue to spend money

I say the same thing, then that happens 17 times and it turns into an extra $1k that the "project" wasn't budgeted for...lmao

Yea, you could definitely get away with S1's. S2's are going to give up some off boost response/power for probably only 5-10whp up top.

I was surprised at just how cheap cyro treating is. I'd like to do that and the coating... but my budget is seriously tight. No way i could do all that, unfortunately. The additional down time would suck, too.. but it's mostly an issue of cost for me.

They did the tops, yes, along with the skirts. When I pulled them out, i couldn't really tell they were coated at all. Not sure if there are different ways to coat stuff... my old exhaust mani and turbo had a shiny, aluminum look to them. the pistons looked flat grey and flat black. I dunno.
I'm sure S1 cams and the 71HTA should easily do 400whp with supporting mods and the right fuel, so the S2 definitely should. I picked up some S1s for my HTZ Green. I can't wait to see how they do.

Also, your sig flatters me. I feel famous LOL

Thats very neat, i'd never heard of that for internals.
I wonder how much you'd have to bore over or if it keeps the piston from getting hot enough to expand enough to not have to worry about it.. I'll research this some.

As far as the cams go, I usually like to find someones build, and see if their curve looks like what I'm after. Which may be a terrible way to do things but most of the setups I had seen were what Im looking for and they had S2's.
Best I remember the S2s sacrificed the least down low for bigger gains in the mid range up to like 8k on a 2.0.

Make sure and post up numbers and stuff when you get yours done though man cause that new Green looks awesome! I wonder if that'll get their new SS housing (may it already does? Im lazy) and if the little bit of latency on power will be worth it.

For me, S2's saw most of the gains past 4500, and you can feel it. When my car had the stock turbo, the boost hit at 3600, then you felt the motor come on the cams at 4500-5000. S1's will come on earlier and on the small 71hta they won't give up much out the top.

The ceramic is thin enough to not affect clearances. I had the same concern and was sure to ask before doing it. I took the pistons in to have the tops done. It was fairly priced and only $30 more to do the skirts, so i said, "why not?". I can't say how other places do the coating, but I'd imagine there still should be no issues with PTW.

IMO, looking at others' builds to base your ideas is perfect. What can be better than real-world numbers? That's how I started my build. For sure, not a bad idea!

We all now, by now, that the S2 vs S1 makes more power while giving up (relatively) very little down low, so I'm sure you will love them. Will they peak enough to justify the loss, is the question. But you've been researching, so probably know the answer to that. That turbo makes power and torque so fast, I gotta imagine you'll hardly notice. I'm addicted to "right now power" (jesus that 71hta is a sweet turbo) so wanted to minimize my loss after going to the green. I'm hoping the S1s will help with that. They fit the rev range i operate in better than the S2, anyway. I should have the perfect (for me) setup.

For sure I will post results as soon as i have some numbers and graphs. I just hope my home-built engine stays together. LOL

Got mine today. Wish I could say I was stoked, but I was met with disappointment when I opened the box.

I ordered this:

And got this:

So, I can't do the install because I don't have the right intake, nor the budget for one. I also live in CA so want the stock cover to pass visual inspections.
Yay.
I didn't want to drive the damned car, anyway. LOL

On the bright side, they cleaned the housing up a bit and painted it grey?
The turbine wheel sure looks different than I remember. Looks dangerous LOL

That's an 11 blade turbine, and you paid for an HTA compressor. You didn't get an FP54. Also it's labeled "EVO 9 67" so you got the big 67mm turbine. It's gray because it's been bead blasted, not painted. Did you call them to place that order?

They might have at least used the 73htz compressor since I doubt they still make the HTA in that size.

Great. There were no options on turbine sizes when i ordered, so i assumed they were all the same. Then i emailed and specifically questioned the "HTA" note on the invoice and got this reply:

"There are no more hta wheels
It has to be z"

So, here I am thinking I'm getting the FP54, with the HTZ wheel, and the stock comp housing.

F me. Even when i buy new, I can't get it right.

Note to self. Only let Kaj place orders for turbos and pizza if he picks up the phone and calls lol

I called them three times to confirm certain aspects of the order. I never heard nor saw an option on turbine sizes. I read about how they went back to the smaller turbine so assumed that's what I would get. Turns out the HTZ Green comes with the 67mm wheel unless you specifically request otherwise. Then again, I also confirmed which compressor housing I was going to get by phone.....twice. By two different people.
LOL
