EVO IV Transmission specs

Hey All,

About to tackle some work on the Evo. My clutch is toast, so it's time to dig in. She's my daily driver so I can't have the downtime. I'm considering buying an Evo IV engine/trans set as the price isn't much more than just the trans from the VIII. Then I'd have a block/head to play with or sell to recover some funds.

I know the IV trans will bolt up (and the transfer case is useless). My question is mainly gear ratios. I use Tephra V7 with gear based boost and want to make sure I can bolt this up with no tuning issues. I would probably

I'm still on the fence about this, just gathering information.

Brady

evo 4 to 6 have an awesome tranny it has the Evo 9 first gear.

Evo 4 engine sucks though I would stay away and just buy a nice used short block. Evo 4 are very weak.

I would really just be using the IV engine for the block and head. I wouldn't be using the internals. Same block and head, right?

The head is the same, the block is different and is prone to crank walk, so I would avoid spending any money on the block

Is it the block or the crank?

Local JDM importer sells IV engine and trans sets for a couple hundred more than I can find just a trans from a VIII. Seems like a bargain

Why do you need a trans though?

Bearings need replaced, several gears grind and I'm sure the synchros need replaced. I bent the 3-4 select rod last time I had it apart. 5th gear splines on the I put shaft are worn.
