I have 32,000 miles on my EVO. It puts down ~300awhp and I'm still on the stock clutch with no issues at all.

I have the small things like the 4th gear whine and transmission rattle but no syncro issues, shift forks, etc.

I have to say a lot of it has to do with the fact that I don't drive the **** out of it: redline dumps, speed shifting, etc.

QUESTION: Are you guys getting these sychros replaced under warranty?

I have an 03 EVO with 25k miles.... it doesn't grind but its starting to get VERY notchy. I can return the car to stock in no time at all and take it in but I would hate to do all that work for a denial.

What is the drivetrain warranty on an 03?

one thing that seems to help me from having grinding issues... is replacing the transmission fluid more often. I use BG Syncroshift.... anytime if feels notchy... i just replace the fluid.. Shifts like butter after that.
I have only seen the 5th gear syncro problem at 100+ on the track. Just had to take the shift a little slower... for now.

I think the transmission has a design problem. I've driven a lot of manual transmission cars a lot of miles and nothing shifted this bad, ever! The dealer claims they all shift like that. Isn't it kind of strange how it is even worse when it's cold? Why is Mitsubishi looked down on in Japan, losing major market share? Covering up vehicle defects! Could I drive my car better, matching revs, etc., bs. Sure. Should I have to? Do all performance cars trannys have these same problems? I doubt it.

I'm 36 years old. I'm in LOVE with all type of sports car. There for, honestly i never had other car then a SC. I did abuse them when i was 18 and so. But i can't recall any tranny problem came like the evo has....Nice and slow... If something happend ,Bumm... that's it.
So this is why i strongly conviced there is a problem with the factory evo tranny. Besides the fact, i never had any issue/tranny,not clutch/ with another car, what i didn't used for race. Before i got my Evo 8.

There are 30,000 of these cars (maybe more) in the USA now.. Out of the 30,000 there are maybe 1500 or so reported transmission problems, of that 1500, most were probably due to abuse..

Thats a pretty low number.. My car WAS covered under a 5th gear grind TSB, However I never had any problems with the transmission, I noticed it was a little crunchy and mentioned it when I brought it in for service. They replaced a selector fork and slider, and gave me a new 5th gear synchro (even though it was in good condition) They would have replaced my clutch under warranty, except when they inspected it they said there was no evidence of excessive wear.

THat was in 2003, I've never had any transmission problems before, or since.

I have almost 50,000 miles on my car, 35k of it was WHILE HIGHLY MODIFIED, I have had the car at the drag strip, ran a 12.93 when the car was bone stock, ran an 11.72 and 11.63 on various Buschur stages..

Although I'm certain there are several cars that have had legitimate problems, I have a hard time believing that a majority of those problems are not abuse, neglect, or inexperience related.

American "Muscle cars" are built with much stronger transmissions because they were designed for the american market.. Where very stop light is an excuse to race to the next one. This culture doesn't really exist in other countries.. They are more interested in road racing or rally racing. This is what this car was designed for.

If you want to play, you have to pay. Stop blaming the dealer, mitsubishi, and everyone else for something well within your own control..

Sorry this wasn't directed to the previous poster, just this entire thread, because It comes up every few months and most of us are pretty tired of hearing about it because we have been around long enough in the community to know some of the people who complain about the problems and what REALLY caused them.

Don't use anything but the factory Diaqueen.. The aftermarket fluids are too thin and don't have the shock modifiers needed to prevent damage to the bearings. This has been documented time and again, it shifts smoother initially, but will lead to premature wear.

I use factory Diaqueen in the Tfer case and rear diff.
The transmission... i use bg syncroshift.
So far so good...

And whether it has been documented .... well there has been enough talk about many different products.. with very different opinions....

Here is a large thread about it...

anybody knows its true?
I ordered the TSB for the sticky heat control knob from NHSTA. In it Mitsu allows 3 hours for replacement of the heat blend door. The dash has to be completely removed to get to the heater box.

I was at the dealer buying a heat blend door for my car so I asked how long it took them to do this job. The reply I got was 8 hours if done by their best tech. So, the dealer is out five hours or more of labor any time this job is done under warranty.

Everyone has to remember that cars have "traits". I believe that everyone thinks that they have this Rally car and think its bullet-proof or something. I have seen so many people have a brand new EVO and go do 5-6K rpm stand-still launches all day long. I mean come on. The car is great, and was designed to be great, but not to be abused. I feel many of the claims are drivers error and Mits has been very good about warranty work for most of the folks out there. Mits does need to coach their dealers better. The PR skills are lacking big time. Argueing to customers over warranty work is not going to bring customers back.
