For a 270hp car a decent $2000 SMT is suitable.

Saying it's too expensive is really spouting of a lot of misinformation.
Not all SMT's are the same.... an MR2 w/ the SMT is actually slower than one with the extra pedal.

The MR Spyder is known for being abel to be shifted faster manually, but the down shifts are quicker, and never miss. Plus one missed shift and you can kiss the gains of perfect fast shifts good by.

It is a bit slower, but it's been a few years down the road now, and I'd bet one that would run about $2500 would be as fast as the M3 version and that would be perfect.

I know this was a long time ago, but I just had to take note. Imagine the American market for a French car....
Puegot or Citroen could put out the hottest performing rally racer in the history of motorsports...they could have a built-in hummer-giver in the dash...you'd still get run off the road for driving one. I think France has pretty much eliminated themselves from selling us cars.

"Whatryudrivin?" ... "a Puegot"

I'm sure the same racism/nationalism existed after WWII towards japanese and german vehicles/owners. I wouldnt' let someone elses ignorance and stupidity sway my decision to purchase something.

Are we sure it isn't beyond Toyota's ability as well? Usually if it ISN'T a Ferrari or Lambo, the SMT's and 6-speeds of the world are usually made by someone else, like Getrag, Tremec or Borg-Warner. Just like the 6-speeds in both the Supra turbo and the 3000GT VR-4 were from Getrag, maybe this one is too.

Maybe we can just buy the bits straight from Getrag or Borg-Warner and tape some up and down buttons on the dash and steering wheel and on the no longer useful shifter and make a homebrew version...

Hmm, I wonder if can call up their big daddy - DC - and ask for an SMT... I'm sure DC-spec'd stuff would work out just fine

What is DC? Daimler Chrysler?

They are only strategic partners, but they could quickly use their bits..

Doesn't DC (yep, Daimler Chrysler) own something like 30% of mits? It's hard to keep track nowadays...

I find it a little odd too. The RS sounds was described to us being "ready for the track, for race teams." I kinda figured we'd see a lower powered automatic, or a nicer sound system, or leather. We certainly weren't asked an opinion on what the next years Evo would offer.

If they don't care to listen, that's fine. THey have to deaql with the cars sitting on their lots. Maybe I'm way off base, but I think most potential owners would be more interested with a few minor tweaks. Better Aero. SMT and cruise. And those are not anything near as difficult as getting a different motor EPA certified or crash tested.

Skip the stupid SMT! I don't need that to be a good and fast driver.

Bring us that MR model Evo! Aluminum roof, forged rims...badass color...that is all that I want for Christmas!!!
