Modification Regrets?
I bought my car with a ton of mods on it (don't recommend it, but I got a super deal), and I have spent most of the time de-modding it. I have ripped out an electronic boost controller, re patched all the wires from the alarm that was put in, replaced the generic large FMIC with a stealth Perrin FMIC, got rid of the TurboXS exhaust.
I definitely do not recommend the turboXS exhaust to ANYONE. It is way too loud.
On that same note, It also has a turboXS blow off valve (vta). I absolutely hate this blow off valve. It is so loud. I look like a ricer and I drive an Evo ffs. If you're looking for a VTA blow off valve that is loud enough to wake the dead, TurboXS is your beast. Personally I'm going to the MR Diverter valve. I drove in an MR with one at English Racing, so much more sexy.
Other than that I'm pretty happy with what else is on there.
Btw, when i had my transfer case and transmission rebuilt by English Racing, I put an OEM clutch in, instead of the ACT that was in it. So much smoother and funner to drive.

I literally had the same problem, bought my evo with a bunch of modded parts, crappy ones btw, spent weeks de-modding and putting in oem parts. Till today its still not complete, but hey, in the end i still got a great deal as u did and know itll be well worth it once complete.
Essentially they are correct if the clutch really wasn't adjusted correctly. Improper clutch adjustment will lead to clutch drag. Clutch drag destroys synchronizers and causes high rpm lockouts.
I see a lot of guys talking bad about ACT, but my issue was when I thought I would replace a perfectly fine oem flywheel with a lite flywheel thinking I was gonna gain from it. Boy was I wrong. I go to the dragstrip no and then, and when I messed up and pulled the oem flywheel an tried to launch with the lite flywheel it just bogged!
The oem had enough inertia to get me out the hole, the lite flywheel I had to feather the clutch out the hole, in turn a new disc was calling my name in 8 months!! So lesson learned....if it aint broke don't phack it up!

Just finished reading this thread front to back. Awesome!
I will add my 2 cents. I like to think I typically spend a lot of time researching the parts I put on my Evo, even ones that are not terribly expensive.
The one major regret I have with a part was buying a Koyo Radiator. My stock let go and at the time I daily drove the car so I had to make a quick decision. I was going to get a Mushimoto, but figured I would spend the extra money and get a "high quality" radiator that would have better cooling properties for road racing. I quickly found out what a pile of crap the Koyo Rad was.
The radiator made it through a single track event and 250 miles of street driving before it started to leak everywhere from the bottom endtank. STM helped me out big time (who I purchased it through) and replaced the radiator on their dime after I sent it back to them. They ordered me another Koyo replacement. The 2nd one made it approximately 5,000 miles street driving, no track events, before it started to leak like crazy. I was so frustrated, went back to a used stock radiator and no problems since.

Picked up some S3s for a 2.4 build. They were too aggressive so I went with the R2s. According to my tuner (Sean at FFTEC) he does not see much real world difference between the S2 and R2 - I thought that was interesting.
so with you. all i've been reading are issues with mods and going back to stock for smog.. so much hassle for having fun in california
running through little issues as it is with a stock car, so i'm just focusing on maintaining the ride as commuter/weekend/dailydriven car. as of right now the car only has an act clutch. i don't track/race it so it doesn't bother me. i do get lockouts at high RPMs when i drive it hard but it'snot worth changing if i wont track it. the only thing i don't like is the stock ralliart spoiler that i've been meaning to take off. super wimpy.

I don't regret this mod, but I do wish I would've went with another brand. I got a MAP o2 dump and for some reason I kinda wish I went with a toxicfab o2 dump!
Mechanical mods, no regrets--reason, research, and dont forget to buy all the replacement parts for all associated parts removed. Show and shine, none, sleeper all the way, so no wings, fins, drops,or rubbing. The only thing, I wish I would have been able to get more info on was the STRI gauges, blackout kind. Cant see them at all in the day light. Low light and night they show up great--not to mention if you have a sender go out, you cant buy one separately. Do it once, do it right.
My only regret is not knowing WTF the previous owner really did to the car before I got to it. I found out that the coilovers were installed wrong (something about the 2 main installation bolts are set in backwards...) and now I'm getting hard idle dip (read: stalling out) when hitting the clutch. Incredibily annoying when the car seizes up trying to get off the highway through an offramp. :/ I'm sure things will get better come spring when I can get real intimate with the car. I just find all of this annoying since I've got a LOT of catchup to do after I have to drive it for a few months as-is.
