How many of you are tired of seeing/hearing about beaten on Evo's?
I would say the best bang for the buck race car.. "cheap" has a negative connotation associated with it.
I am on the fence on this issue, I keep mine sparkling clean and garaged, but I also understand the other mentality of driving this car the way it was built to be driven.
Then there are the deushebags who "CF" the inside and outside of their cars with 12 different knock off brands, mistune, and do their own work when they dont have the knowhow. For these people, i have no respect. Go buy a kit car or something else to destroy.
There is a difference between driving it the way it was designed and simply destroying the car with stupid mods.

I'm personally getting sick of this...it always seems to be the same situation where ever I look. Young kids buying up used Evo's and then proceeding to destroy/maim/beat on and generally give no care or attention to the car other than when they break something. I realize this is a car that loves a good flogging now and then, but something can be said for taking care of a machine to keep it in top form, flogged on or not. All too often I see engine bays that look like it should be from the local "Honduh Boi" down the street, and way too many threads with questions that have been covered thousands of times. And of course the few threads here and there that are above and beyond the call of stupidity. This is a machine for the enthusiast, and it really grates on my nerves lately to see these machines in the hands of new drivers or uneducated drivers. I really think this car had such a high price tag for a reason, in the fact that it really wasn't aimed at the typical young "tooner boi" crowd. If you're a kid under 20 and drive an Evo and have the knowledge, background, and afford and actually do keep your Evo in the best shape you can, then more power to you.
To those that can't and don't have the knowledge required, please...learn as much as possible before another Evo gets ruined. If you don't want to put the time and effort in, then you'll get no respect from me or your fellow Evo owners.
Sorry if this thread offends some, but it's something that's been grating on my nerves that I had to get off my chest.

Umm, guys, it's an evo. It's a car to race, track, and beat on in general. It's not a ferrari to cruise up and down the strip in. Servicing them is very important but spending more time cleaning them than driving them is a bit ridiculous. I just keep up with the basic services and keep everything running well, but I don't baby it excessively. That's just wasting the car, IMO.
I kinda agree with the TC. It pains me a little to see the EVO becoming the new "Honda Civic." It seems like every teenager has one and they're littered with garbage mods. Before I bought my EVO I used to think that it was super rare and an "elite" car and there was some prestige in having one. Now I realize that it's just as common as any other car...
I see what other people are saying though. My friends make fun of me too though because I baby my car. They always say "why did you buy an EVO if you're not going to drive it fast? Why even mod it?" I never have a good answer for them, but I just take pride in having a clean, fast car that's there for me when I need it.

Im 19 and even know I pretty sure your post is direct at my age group, I have to agree with you. I like to think of myself as a exception because everything I know about cars came from older generations of enthusists. I cant deny the that most people my age are idiots. Dont make me repost Norcal Imports' web page
. But we're not all bad, and we dont all leach off our parents. My car was purchased by me. I paid the down payment, I pay the bills, I got the loan on my own. For the record, I've had to restore the car back to a respectable state after the last owner, who was "30". He had smaller tires on the rear "because it make the car drift better"
, It had a KN Typhoon on it
, HKS BOV
, etc. Not to mentionthe rims were pretty messed up because he hopped a curb drifting which knocked of the rear tires before landing
. I got a great deal on the car though
.
Point is for the most part your right about young people and cars, but dont be so quick to judge because as I just explained sometimes older people can be complete idiots and beat the crap out of these cars too.
Thanks for letting me rant.

i got my Evo on my 19th birthday (i'm paying for half of the car, so no i'm not a spoiled kid) and to be honest with you i was a little uneducated, but i had the best intentions. ever since i got the car i did all i could to learn about it, spent hours on forums reading up on various things and i also did all the maintenance and mods myself; even the clutch! i i felt as if i grew a lot more by doing that and feel as though i'm not part of the demographic that your original post was directed towards, but at the same time i know exactly how you feel. just yesterday as i was cruising down the freeway a white STI starts to tailgate me and then he gets beside me. i just throw a deuce and continue to drive normally while he downshifts and cuts off a couple cars and then almost rear ends another one. haha.
I know exactly where your coming from, Im 19 and ive seen a couple evos that are not well taken care of, i barely drive my evo i try and wash it once a week but, I have a DD and never really drive the evo but on weekends or when my DD is broken, Right now the evo is in my driveway sitting under a cover where its been under the cover for almost 2 weeks now, b/c the weather here has been sh!tty lately I make my own payments and pay for the whole car since day one, since 2 1/2 years ago when i purchased it, My evo has been my dream car since ive laid eyes on it. but right now its kind of hard paying for it since i was laid off a month ago and it so damn hard trying to find a job out there right now, But im getting the MAX unemployment and that is covering it for the most part.
I'm from the corner known as. I can name every thread pitch/size bolt in any dsm wether its gvr4/1g/2g/starion and realized the money i'm dumping in my current 2g i could buy an evo(attainable dream car).
So i went out and looked at the cheaper side of the range. I found a mint body 03 evo8 bby which mechanically looked like it was at the hands of the same people you describe(low compression/whining t-case/fried exedy twin disk/5th gear grind/eventually threw a rod) but for the deal of $12.6k you can't beat it.
Long story short she will be better than new and floggin with the best of them this summer. So i guess you could say i saved her
. Also the pimp(me) has since turned her into a garage *****.

Mulholland0132 I agree with that!!
The other HUGE factor for me was what other car would I own or build to have this kind of power to weight ratio and actually get traction.

In the Z06 world, unless you use nitrous, it's 7K installed for 565whp! For 8-9K installed you can get a 630-640whp in a blower, but after that it's retarded stupid money to go fast.
They have Z06's with 60K in the drivetrain and they trap146-148mph the EVO is just unfair in it's abilities.

Sadly I considered this during September. Look in my sig. to validate that. I was so aggravated with younger more dangerous kids buying these cars.....and than I had a really descent offer for my car from a dad buying it for his son. The kid was in highschool and his dad said it was his sons dream car. I would never forgive myself if I sold the evo to someone who couldn't drive it to the proper limit and killed themselves...so I declined the offer.

Back on Topic: I am dissapointed in local meets and car shows when the evo scene is becoming ridiculous with "the former honda crowd" buying these cars (sometimes highly modified) and not understanding or appreciating what they own...........but at the end of the day I love my car and frankly I can't be bothered by anyone elses car, or age, or maturity, or whatever.

At the same time at my old job I dealt with a lot of Porsche and Audi idiots, I've spent the hellish time working on older Lotus's. A lot influenced my decision to get an Evo over a BMW or an older Porsche/Lotus (the latter 2 mostly because of the ungodly high pricetag for what usually ends up being a nightmare), number 1 being that whatever vehicle I got had to be AWD due to the area I live in. It's cold here, and seems like it snow's at least 7 months out of the year lol. I have other vehicles to drive if I really wanted to, but for that rare occasion or if the mood strikes to shoot down an unplowed dirt road in the snow, I can. This is a machine built with a purpose, I'm not saying don't enjoy them and what they do once and a while, I'm just saying enjoy your Evo, drive your Evo, maintain your Evo, and remember what it was intended to be.
As to Evo's at car shows, that's a whole topic in itself. I like going to shows and sometimes meeting some cool people. Unfortunately the current trend of car shows and the judges that run them is just so...well, unpractical I guess could be the term? Evo's at shows with more tv's or stereo than the local Circuit City is just not that cool anymore, and I really don't understand why people buy into that F&F hype still. It's a pretty sad day when a judge turns his nose up at your Evo with countless tasteful mods and more motor work than most cars that usually are at those types of shows, just for the simple fact of not having "big subs" in the back of the car or "no tv's". Points deducted for no stereo and no tv's...it's an unfortunate fact at every show I've been to lol.
I don't think you should be so quick to judge young evo owners.
Yes there are some kids that beat the hell out of their cars but we don't all do that. And i'm sure there are people in their 30's and 40's that don't take the best care of their cars either. I'm 19 and have worked very hard for what i have. I work the graveyard shift as a machinist and pay for my car by myself including my $240 dollar a month insurance and college. I wash it weekly and wax it monthly minimum except for in the winter, gets dirty too fast. I don't even have an exhuast on my car yet since i had to do 1k worth of work on the timing belt and what not. Just don't think all of us young evo owners are hard on their cars. I haven't even launched my car. I'm sure there are older people with more money than me that take their cars to the track and do a lot more to their cars then the yound owners out there.

). More or less the general "I don't care" attitude about the maintenance as well, and I realize that things are tight right now and some can't afford the maintenance as much as they'd like to. For the most part I think the majority of owners and enthusiasts on here do take care of their cars the best they can. As for taking these cars to a track, I honestly don't think they're the greatest platform for 1/4 mile straight lines, and they shine doing what they were intended for in auto-x, but that's my personal opinion. Everyone's opinion differs on the subject.
