evo 8 sputtering?

did a pull on the freeway today, down shifted to 4th (tuner told me to downshift if im going to go WOT in 5th)

as i pulled WOT in 4th, the car pulled hard but almost felt like it was stuttering for a second... i freaked out and let off the gas, everything was fine. I then realized my fuel light came on. Could this have caused the sputtering? Car was recently tuned by a local and well respected company. I did not see the cel light come on ( tuner said they set up the knock sensor)

Filled the car up but never was able to do a pull on my way to work, to much traffic. Also, i never broke 100, probably 85-90 or so.

should i be worried?

I just had the exact same issue yesterday. As for being worried... I would have to say yes. My Evo had a 'major fail' today and it all started with the same symptoms. I am in the process of posting it up now (Xmas Evo Fail).

Derrick (I forget if that is how your name is spelled as I know a few Dereks), it likely wasn't gas. Our gas light comes on pretty early in general (I suppose that could be different from one to the next). IIRC, you have a walbro, right? So that shouldn't be an issue unless your filter maybe has some issues.

Without more info or being in the situation, it is hard to say. In 4th if I don't go full throttle and say I'm going up hill especially, I can have some stuttering. Basically the system is at the "imperfect" spot for knowing if I want it to blow off or not. I usually know where that is and it doesn't happen unless I'm not paying attention. I'm guessing that wasn't the issue with you though, as it sounds like you were doing a pull.

I don't suppose you had gotten gas somewhere sketchy? Likely not the cause, but just asking. You're probably fine, but maybe take it easy. BTW - you probably don't want to post anything too specific about your pull as it can be generally frowned upon.

Ok i wont describe the pull next time. I am going to Canada now, so i cant do anything with the car, it will have to sit for a few days.

Car drove fine after that but, never got it back up to speed - I have walbro, TBE, MBC, english tune, intake, LICP. Running 24 pounds on a safe tune.

Gas was fine for the whole tank, but at the end is when i noticed this. The gas light may have been on prior to the pull. If i had a boost leak would my gauge still be accurate?

Well... Ill be back in 3 days and giving you a call dan.

^werd; have fun up North!

If you have a boost leak you would only likely be showing your boost after leak. Let's say the leak is stealing 5psi, then you'd be showing 19psi.

Fuel starvation, boost leak or spent plugs... Don't worry unless all 3 check out...

I didnt actually check anything, except to see if my boost gauge was still hitting 24 psi, and it was.

I will do some searching to see how to check the spark plugs.

thanks guys

It was more than likely low fuel. I've done this before same symptoms same outcome. I have the frogeyes pod on the column which unless u look around it it blocks the gas hand. Went wide open throttle and sure enough it sputtered almost like a fuel cut. My friends 2g eclipse does it as well before the light even comes on. Nothin to worry bout just fill her up and happy boosting. That's my 2 cents.
