Just got, buying, reviewing, thinking about a new Evo [Ultra Hyper Mega MERGE]
damn dude that's crazy. gas here's like a shade under 2.
i think i can deal with the gas prices, and as for the suspension, i don't think it could be worse than my civic's set up now. in fact, when i'm in a stock car with normal softer suspension, i really dislike it. ride comfort isn't a concern for me really. i'd probably get tein flex dampers anyway.

hueman..the cool thing about the Evo is that it is damn fine in stock trim. Even though you will want to do some mods at some point, you can save money by buying the best package off of the showroom floor, and just enjoy it for a while as is.
Btw- I noticed your earlier comment regarding AWD for the winter weather. If you see snowy/icy weather where you live, be ready to pop for another set of winter or M&S rated tires, as the stock Yokahamas just won't cut it in cold weather.
Just a consideration as you review car/cost factors.

And there are equally as many faulty claims of no problems

I think the Evo is for you. You're young (I'm assuming), you'll make more money later on. Have fun now before you get null to fun, but do it responsibly. Just plan the finances and budget extra in. Yes, the tank takes a good $20 to fill up (and gas is cheaper in my area of the US). If you're worried about warranty, service blows with Mitsubishi dealers. I'd say screw it and get Geico insurance, and have their mechanical breakdown coverage (cheap), which covers your stupid driving
, if it came down to you breaking stuff.
The Evo screams performance and even has it's practical side (4 doors, roomy, AWD). It may not be an S2000 with looks, but trust me, people will admire and gawk at the car on the road. It's got tons of potential too for the future, if you ever got tired of the power. But honestly, if I was in your situation, I'd wait til the 2004 cars come in, when the Evo should have its kinks worked out. That way, you'll have saved that much more money.

As others have pointed out, the EVO was not designed as a drag car, and it makes a damn poor one in stock guise. Most rallys take place on surfaces with a lot of slip, i.e. dirt, gravel, mud, gravel on tarmac, etc. Then they import the car to the U.S. where people want to take a rally car and make it into a 600hp poorly streetable drag car. That makes no sense, other than to say look what I did, if you want a drag racer go pick up a late model Camaro SS and put a little money into it and you'll have a better 1/4 miler than the EVO will ever be (that was my last toy, so I say that from experience.) If you want a car that handles like a supercar, get the EVO, break it in right, drive it sensibly, and you'll love it. If you "only" do X number of 5000 rpm drops and your clutch fries, well duh of course it fried. The massive contact patch of 4 R compund tires and AWD and limited slip should have told you what was going to give before you even started the car! Ever tried to drive a car around town with a full race clutch that handles that, not fun in stop and go.
Sorry for the rant, just be honest with yourself about how you are prone to driving before deciding on any car, and you'll likely be much happier with whatever you choose.

I think most of your "armchair quaterback" observations are prob based upon your assumptions and speculation based upon your experiences wit your camaro and watching too many rounds of the WRC on speed tv.
First of all - -my EVO with 600 HP give up NO stock functions and driveability on the street. The extra HP has no compromised the "rally" tendancies of the car or any of its capabilities. In fact - its very nice to be able to put 450 whp to the ground in the RAIN.
The "SENSE" it makes is to turn the EVO into a serious FAST street car like a Porsche Turbo, Viper or Ferrari - - maybe your satisfied with stock like performance - - but there are some like me who want to have a awd turbo car that can hang with the big dawgs on the block and in order to do that you'll need over 500 hp
Finally - i drive every day with my Exeddy twin disk clutch - and it is as smooth as silk
i'm pretty much in the same situation as the creator of this thread. The only differnce is that I'm already a college graduate who is trying to get a better paying job. Even with my current job, I'm planning on picking up one in Sept 04'. Maybe I can get a 05' EvO by that time? who knows? Anyhow, I have one year to save up a real good downpayment, and mitsubishi has oine additional year to work out all the kinks and bugs that the 03's may have.
I cant wait to get mine in Yellow with the JDM tails, JDM antenna, and some RalliArt wheels
Engine mods to follow

Al- Just read through the article on your car in modified magazine, and it was a nice article for sure! The thing that continues to amaze me about the Evo is how you can make some serious hp, and still retain drivability, and all-around usefulness. Your car is a perfect example of this reality! Very few cars can withstand those kinds of mods without becoming relegated to a "special purpose" track car that can't be driven on a regular basis.

I will tell you this right now, I love my Evo. Yeah, the clutch doesn't like being beaten on, the drivers rear door as to be aligned because of the paint chip problem, but dammit it's a fun car. If you can afford it, it may just be one of the best purchases you ever make.
I live at home, this car is my only real payment (besides C/C and cell phone), have it under my foks insurance so i only pay $140 a month for it (but that's bound to go up after my accident), but I make under $20k a year. In my mind I am stretching to afford it, but I love this car so damn much, that I'm willing to make that sacrifice.
****, I won't be able to move out until I'm 28 at this rate!!! What have I done?! Oh wait...my car has a turbo...it's bad ***...that's what I've done!

P.S. - just so you all don't think I'm truly worthless because I still live at home, I have a degree and I'm a journalist. WE STARVE!

For a guy like you, yes the Evo is the perfect car (I think you knew that, though). The two questions are:
- Can you afford it (and the insurance)?
- Will you be able to resist modding it (and if not, can you afford the consequences)?
Only you know your limits (the 'ramen threshold'
) but yeah, it's an awesome car. Of course there are also plenty of cars which are fun which can be had for a quarter of the monthly payment and a quarter of the insurance, but it sounds like you have that car already...
[edit: also, if you do decide on getting the Evo, get a credit report before you go into the dealer, so you know where you stand with financing terms and interest rates. My apologies if that's an obvious point
