Just got, buying, reviewing, thinking about a new Evo [Ultra Hyper Mega MERGE]
I'm definitely going to look into it. I have an STI locked at 200 over invoice in NJ. If I can get a Mitsu dealer to go 1k below invoice for an EVO, then I'll see how far the Subie dealer is willing to go to get my business. In the end I'll win with either car being close to invoice.
I don’t normally complain. I’m a pretty easy going guy. If the cashier is off by a few dollars in giving back my change at the grocery store, I don’t complain. I move on. People make mistakes. I’ve always had that motto in my mind for as long as I could remember, until I purchased the 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the car. It’s been a dream of mine to own one ever since middle school, when I went to Taiwan to see my uncle, and was greeted by a beautiful Lancer Evolution V. I was hooked on the EVO bug, and words cannot begin to explain the joy I had when I heard news of the EVO coming to the states. The EVO is the epitome of my automotive desires, and I am not alone in saying that.
However, my dream was mutilated, stomped on, and utterly shred to pieces as if it were fed into a corporation’s favorite paper shredder. That corporation was none other than Mitsubishi. You see, 7 months and 7,000 miles after owning my beautiful Tarmac Black EVO VIII, my motor met a gruesome end. You may think “why is this guy crying, it’s covered under warranty.” However, it’s not. Why? Well, Mitsu says customer neglect, leading to not enough oil in the engine, and instead of trying to help me out, they accuse me of modifying the car (it’s stock) and tell me tough luck. Customer neglect?! You tell me where the “neglect” is when I had the dealership change my oil, spent $50 on Zaino Bros. car polish, bought the extended warranty, routinely washed the car on weekends, manually turbo timed the turbo, spending 2 minutes extra waiting in the car letting everything cool down every time before shutting the car off. In other words, I pampered a WRC car.
It even turns out that low oil wasn’t the cause of the engine failure. The independent shop says broken piston from who knows why, since they’re not allowed to take the motor apart, as it would void the warranty, the same one that has not lived up to my expectations. Also, the cost is much more than what my bank account would allow. I’ve tried to fight this, but a double major in college and limited money prevents me from fixing my baby. I have been without her for 2 weeks, and she sits at a shop with a broken heart.
I am not the only one who’s had a warranty denied by an evil corporation that tries to sell an image it is not willing to back it up. There are many others in similar situations as me, from clutch failure before 5k miles, tranny deaths, to rust developing on 3 month old cars. I write to you in hopes that those potential EVO owners rethink their decisions, as I do not wish the nightmare I am going through on anyone else. Those who have had no problems, do not take your car for granted, as it is a car that is a legend. It is a car with a soul, carried on generation after generation. As for me, I will keep hope alive, and hope for the best.

EDIT: avoid the mitsu dealerships in orlando florida, like don mealey mitsubishi aka sport mitsubishi. they will lie to you right in the face.

That is really sad to hear. It always mifs me when the modified cars go racing and manage to get something covered under warranty that they should be paying for themselves, and then when something like this happens they pass the cost along to some other innocent victim. I hope things can be fixed my Mitsu.
Why do they claim it was neglect?

Hey look yet another thread telling me "JRock don't be stupid and spend your new car savings on a Mitsubishi. You know better. How many damn threads do you have to read about quality control issues and dealer service issues before you finally stop considering it?"
And I tell myself, "But self, I don't like the STi and I really want turbo and AWD."

that really brought a tear to my eye. well actually no, but im an easy going guy also. today i was gettig food and they guy gave me 3 dollars back instead of 4. People always try to take advantage of you. people do it all the time to me but i dont think anything of it and move on. I know people tell me to just smack them in the face, but i really dont care. If mitsubishi did that to me i would do something about it because my car means the most to me even more than my dignity and if something happened to it i wouldn't just sit around.
thats my story and im sticking to it.

I had to add a 1/2 quart of oil to my evo at 2500 miles. I thought that was kinda weird. Does the evo eat oil, even in the least bit. It makes me wonder.
I was fortunate to get my clutch(burnt 2800miles) replaced under warrenty, I have since been informed that they will cover no more. There warranty is not worth the paper it is written on. I paid almost 2k for an extended warranty wrap. Where the dealer told me it covered bumper to bumper and EVERYTHING in between. I asked about clutch and drivetrain and he said yes (nothing in writing). If they don not cover my car I guess I will get a refund on that crappy extention. Then I will give tickets to all there employees!!!!
All in All Mitsu should back there customers(the legit cases) This will be my last mitsu, I love my car muy mucho, but I do not like the way me and my fellow comrads are being treated.

The irony for me is that I worked service-side as a writer for a brand new Mitsu dealer for a couple months last fall; helped get it off the ground. And part of the interface with the Mitsu reps was about how Mitsu is going to be trying hard to turn their image around and yadda yadda, and yet here we are a year later and MMA's still just as big a bunch of thieves/jokers/whatevers as they were in the past. =p
Makes me glad I dipped out of there after 3 months.

AS much as it sucks to hear this, the threads on this board are isolated incidents. Knock on wood for me, as I am the most abusive Evo owner I know to date, grinding gears, running through the gears every chance I get and pulling as many G's on every U-Turn I can, and every parking lot I see I do donuts in. The motor is tight, the car is strong and while I feel for you, I love my car and it loves me.
