Just got, buying, reviewing, thinking about a new Evo [Ultra Hyper Mega MERGE]

To be perfectly honest, ever since the EVO came out i've been trying to find negative things about it. One of my best friends makes fun of me for it, saying the EVO will haunt you until you get it. First it began with the looks(oh its an ugly box compared to my s2000), but after driving one I got out, and looked at a red one on the lot and was like staring at it for 15 minutes from every angle possible. So I now actually love the way the car looks. Next it was the shifter....nowhere near as smooth or short as the S2000. Upon driving it more I realized that the shifter felt like I was really shifting the drivetrain, and I started to love how you have to PUT IT in its place. The driver must tell this car exactly what to do, and I began to love it even more. The list continues.....I've seriously been TRYING to find reasons NOT to make this greuling trade, but i'm running out of reasons not too. Can this car really be that good?

HERES THE TRUTH STR8 UP- you have heard y the evo is so great, ill put it in perspective having been in your position.
evo drives just like the s2000 from 1k-3krpm - not enough power to spin the tires and bogs no matter what. S2000 steering has less feeling but is very similar in terms of precise-ness and accuracy
what you have in the S2000, YOU WILL NEVER find in the evo, OR ANY OTHER CAR. my dad and i have tried to find it and its a lost cause (my dad has an '02 S2000)
HE didnt trade the S2000 for the EVO because he knew he would miss the S2000, and driving the evo and S2000 back to back - its SO DIFFERENT that you GOTTA HAVE BOTH!!! lol. luckily we are able to have both, but if you are not in this position, I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND you question and NEED to know Y the EVO is a good buy.
All i could say is the evo doesnt offer you the up close and personal touch of the S2000 - the S2000 seating/small tight cabin/ pedals - steering- SHIFTER/ CONVERTIBLE/ VERY AdEQUATE power and SOUND = out of this world fun
FOR those of you that havent driven an S2000 to its limits, dont count it out- it handles, and is FUN at its limits. its not crazy fast nor does it pull crazy turning G's but its perfect for havign fun on the street and wont get u in trouble like the evo will
i know you know what im talkin about Yoshi
HOWEVER- like mentioned - the EVO offers better handling/power/breaking/interior space that gives it less intimate feeling of S2000 but is excellent in its own way. visibilty and seating position are just as good as S2000 though the interior space makes it feel as if it wasnt. pull your seat up nice and close and your seat back nice and str8 up like you have to do in the S2000 and you learn to find the evo just as fun as the S2000 minus the no roof

some of the resons i love my EVO way more than i loved my S2000 is interior room, not the back seats, just the front. the abilty for me to recline the seat while being comfy with the pedals is nice. also the S2000 bit me once with its snap oversteer, the EVO wont
oh and im WAAAAAAY biased in the favor of AWD turbo

lets see cons...hmmm.
I've had it for 2 weeks and there's paint chips all over the outer edges of the doors.
No outside temp. I'm just spoiled from the Infiniti I had before.
I'm still undecided on the stereo/speaker system. Kind of petty for a 6 speaker system. But then again it doesn't bother me because it's another cost saving step that let me get this rocket for a cheap price.

If you off throttle at the edges of adhesion, the Evo transfers to a slow controllable oversteer. The S2000 is known to have snap oversteer if throttle is modulated too much at the limit. So with that in mind, I believe the Evo is a much safer car at it's limits.
the only thing I don't like about my Evo is that I can't see the speedo numbers between 20-90 mph....it gets blocked by the left edge of the steering wheel.
Other than that, I think the Evo is an incredible car!

My 2 cents. First things first, I love this car. The driving dynamics are outstanding. If you're looking for gremlins in the closet, I've yet to find them. But, trade offs are made to get this much performance at this price. Personal preferences...
* Not completely sold on the big wing. S2000 looks classy, Evo looks juvenile.
* Recaro's have fantastic lateral support but a bit too much lumbar for me.
* Engine / drivetrain isn't smooth in traffic (for obvious reasons).
* I'm new to Mitsu, but possible long term reliability / build quality issues vs the S2000?
Otherwise, it's pretty much exactly as described. Interior is a bit low rent, no cruise, etc..
Like I said, there's no such thing as a perfect car. Trade offs have to be made to gain this sort of performance. When I'm behind the wheel, there's no place I'd rather be. Just go into it with open eyes and love the car for it's personality. The car is truly fantastic. Now, absent a need for a back seat (which was my circumstance... baby on board) I'd think long and hard before trading out of a S2000 prematurely and taking a big hit. Yeah, the performance is there but it's incremental. The Honda will make you giggle just as much as the evo will. Whatever you decide, good luck and enjoy!!

my only complaints at this point (after 3 days of ownership) are the crappy stereo
my arms hits the armrest from 1st to 2nd shift, unless i hold it up
uhhhh, the green and amber lighting... it should all be amber...!
and the front end seems to sit higher than the rear... not by much, just ebough to get me looking at it...
speedo is kinda hard to see...
but everything i just listed here, means nothing once you get behind the wheel, and go for a drive...
this is the most fun car i have ever owned, without a doubt, and i haven't even gotten her broken in yet... so i haven't been the the right side of 5000rpms yet...

how is the long-term reliability/build quality on the evo line? Is it a car you can keep as long as you want, or is it a car that you drive hard then sell after a couple years? Does the car lose any reliability with say a stage 0 package? The honda is very simple n/a 2.0 4-cyl RWD. Very reliable. I'm not sayiing the evo isn't as reliable or even more so, but I just dont know enough on the matter. Never had any experience with mitsus. My father says they are not as reliable(long term) as honda, but then again the EVO is a special car.
I have had my car for a little over a month and a half, and already have 2700 miles on her. Obviously I enjoy driving the car, and so far my gripes are minimal.Heres my list.
1) No cruise control
2) Stereo head unit is pretty poor. My biggest issue is my CD unit skips a lot.
3) Trim and finish is pretty spartan. I actually like the interior ok, its just kind of stark.
4) No boost gauge (Ok, most of my other Turbo cars were not equipped with a boost gauge either!)
5) Climate control would be nice.Even a little nicer manual controls would be a step-up. The factory manual HVAC controls are probably the cheapest feeling part of the dash/interior for me personally.
6) Not a great car for long distance touring over 3-400 miles. It requires constant attention and its engaging nature, that makes it a blast to drive, can also wear you down after a couple of hundred miles behind the wheel. I personally believe Mitsubishi left the cruise off purposely to ensure people don't get too relaxed behind the wheel. If you are looking for comfort then the EVO is not your car.....perhaps a used S4?
BTW-I have previously owned a BMW M3/4, MCoupe, two S4's, and number of other VW's and Audi's, so my preferences are aligned with German cars. The point is I am pretty jaded when it comes to cars. Even considering this factor the EVO meets my needs extremely well.
The EVO is actually as rigid and solid as my M-cars ( well ok the doors and trunk don't feel as solid when shutting, but overall driving feel...yes), which in comparing the EVO to the MCoupe is a pretty major achievement for a 4-door sedan! In fact it is the only performance sedan that is as much fun to drive as my previously owned MCoupe.
My old benchmark sport sedan was my e36 M3 and the EVO easily surpasses it in the acceleration and handling performance categories becoming my new benchmark.
You sound like you have already made your decision. Good luck with your choice and more importantly dealing with your inner-turmoil. I have been there, done that, and it can become all-consuming which isn't a healthy thing.

great thanks alot, keep em coming
Also remember that the S2000 has THE worst stock stereo in probably the history of automobiles. Lets put it this way, the s2000 stereo makes the evo's sound powerful ESPECIALLY in the low end bass frequencies. It may have a cruise control, but it definitely sucks for long drives, probably even worse than the EVO thanks to its loud motor, droning cabin, and zero space to recline/move around. When you're sitting in an s2000 you are "packed in" nice and tight. More snug than any car i've ever felt. So i'm used to having to deal with the extremes of owning a car designed with performance above all other anemities.
......ugh i think i should just flip a coin
