Just got, buying, reviewing, thinking about a new Evo [Ultra Hyper Mega MERGE]
Re: Evo New Driver Friendly?

Hey, i'm new to stick and im seriously considering the Evo8 as my first stick car. I've read up on it, and how it has some clutch/tranny issues. I hear AWD launching isn't too easy either. I've just learned stick on my uncle's beat up truck, and had some practice here and there from my friend's cars. Is the evo8 friendly to new stick drivers, what do you guys think? Thanks.

The evo was my first manual. Although i have driven other manuals, this one i far different than others. Getting it to move smoothly is tricky and takes a lot of practice
I had to teach my friend how to drive his brand new STi. For him it was hard at first but he got the hang of it after a late night and half a day of driving it. However, there is no telling what he did to that car. The noises the STi made when it stalled out, hard starts, ect while he was learning was awful. Like the others have said try to learn in a beater car, or get one of your friends to teach you. If you really want to get the EVO, I suggest learing how to drive in a back parking lot like an office complex. Then take the car out on the road late at night so that you do not have to worry about traffic. Just remeber, you don't f**k the clutch, you make love to the clutch.
I learned stick on my Evo the night I bought it, in a parking lot. Spent 1.5hrs and I was out and about on the streets. I knew theoretically how to drive it, just never tried it much on real manual cars. Then I spent the next week just driving at night where the traffic was light. Don't take it out in rush hour til you really know how to downshift smoothly, hehe.
If you haven't learned well enough on that truck, the best way to learn on the evo would be this:
When have clutch depressed and the car stopped, slowly let the clutch out til the car starts moving a little (very little). You may feel the car stuttering and about to die out, and thats when you need to give it a little gas, but don't floor the gas! When the car moves faster, slowly let the clutch pedal out more, til its fully out.

You may want to budget $2000 in your quest to learn how to drive stick with an Evo. The clutch is weak on this car....and if you slip or drop the clutch often....as most people who are learning do...you wear it out very quickly. It's not a quick or cheap replacement either!
I think that the Evo's is very user friendly for learning. It doesn't easily stall out....the clutch pedal is very linear and easy to figure out....the shifting mechanism is concise so it's easy to find the gears.
But you will likely wear out the clutch quickly if you don't have adequate clutching skills from the onset.
