DIY: Red Out Tails (EVO VII STYLE)
Just thought I would update this thread, for those that may wish to use it as a guide for doing this themselves...
VHT has come out with a product that would make this clear coat and sanding issue a little easier... They have a product similar to their NiteShades (black out paint) that is red. Based on my likely over-extensive experience with VHT products, NiteShades in particular, this new red paint will last without needing clear coat or sanding... And it will likely look great.
I have never used this red NiteShades, but have used the black a lot. I had the black on one of my off road trucks for over 4 years without a single issue of fading. Those tail lights saw it all, from extreme heat in Texas to numerous Michigan and Ohio winters.
If the red is anywhere as good as the original black, it's good stuff. I mean, it was made for this!

So I went out and got the new vht red tint last night and sprayed my extra tails I have...It turned out a lot better than the original black spray. Looks good, real good. Just like the evo 7's

I don't think smoked is legal unless your lights are on but I've driven with many cops following me with my lights off during the day and haven't gotten pulled over. And my evo is black. But honestly the new red looks awesome. I'm really happy with it
It is "illegal" because it impairs your lights visibility. It even says on the cans that it is for off-road use only.
However, I have never had a problem. If you do it carefully you can get a great dark look without much effect in visibility. The key is multiple (3-4) VERY light coats.
I tried the VHT Niteshades (red) and it came out really well. No clear, just 2 coats. If I could do it again I would do 3-4 coats or more. This stuff sprays on really lite and it's hard to judge how dark it is with the Evo IX black housing, but after I peeled the tape off the bottom I wished I had put one or two more coats on to darken up the lines

I'll get some tomorrow when it's not too dark. the back of the Evo is backed up pretty close to the garage door. I'll open the door up and get some good *** shots on the car, lit up, off, etc...
Looks good. I personally would have taken the extra 3 minutes and removed the tail lights from the car. This would practically eliminate any risk of overspray due to wind, etc.
