will the 370z out-perform the Evo X?
heh talking smack on Supra regarding drag racing is not a good idea. It is true that they are better known as 'dyno queen', but that doesn't mean that they don't move
Massive grippy rubbers, diamond strength axles, monster power engine + 3spd auto = teh win, can't beat RWD in drag racing sorry. AWD has its limits once it reaches certain stage, and weight gained from fortifying the drivetrain will overpower the AWD traction at that stage, at least with current materials they use anyways.
I believe the fastest drag race 'evo' is currently a RWD, although that doesn't really make them an 'evo' anymore, I don't even know if the engine is still a 4G63.
The cars that are terrible for drag racing are S2000, or even worse, an RX-8. I think the fastest one was 800whp S2000 but was somewhere in 10s although this may be an old news, but I know that 400whp RX-8s have trouble breaking 12.5 sec 1/4 mile.

umm lol... you guys realize that the 370 comes w/ 275's? and wtf? AWD is ABSOLUTELY not better than RWD when it comes to drag...
maybe... AWD w/ a reasonable driver vs RWD w/ a reasonable driver will be a wash... get the pros in there and the RWD would walk all over the AWD...

Then what makes a Supra run 8sec??

Sorry, let me rephase, cars running on STREET tires. ON STREET TIRES, AWD cars have a huge advantage.
Supras were running 9's at 150+ back in 1998 in 'daily driven' cars. I know, I saw them first hand. They sure as hell weren't on street tires though.
I also saw the first twin turbo Ford GT with about 900whp loop it at mid-track running on street tires.
Obviously, if you get enough traction on the rear, the front end isn't going to have any weight on it anyways and AWD would be worthless. Hence, all the wheel stands the big power RWD cars with slicks do.

That 221 mph evo was insane! Nice find. Oh, and to whoever said that RWD is better than AWD for drag: true, if the car in question is running drag radial slicks. In that case, traction is not an issue and the added weight and powertrain losses make AWD less competitive. On street tires, RWD sucks ***** for big power and this is really where AWD cars dominate. Same story in road racing; EVOs dominate many classes when street tires are used, but throw some slicks on a RWD car, and traction is no longer an issue and the benefits of AWD become less obvious. They each have their advantages in different classes of racing.
As far as the whole debate between the two cars in question here, I believe that the Z is a very impressive car. The 350 sucked, but this new 370 is really winning my respect. I still think that the X, or any evo for that matter, is a better platform for modding because of the fact that the engine is already built for big power moreso than the VQ engine is, and the fact that AWD on street tires will dominate in most venues.
What people don't seem to realize is that even though the Z almost matches the X in overall grip on the skidpad, the moment of inertia when changing directions can and will upset ANY RWD car much moreso than an AWD car, and on a track with a lot of tight switchback turns and chicanes, the X will be able to go much faster and require much less finess and countersteering than the Z will. With slicks though, the Z will be pretty nasty, so it will come down to the driver at that point. Both are great cars, but the Z will cost more to get big performance out of than the X will.

Edmunds' InsideLine - Nissan 370Z Full Test's out:

And the final saying... It will NOT beat the Evo X MR. Though it's still a bit more refined material's wise and I still like the interior over the Evo's.

i've thought quite a bit about getting the new Z, but unless you are going to just drive it, and not have to put more than one other person in it and be able to toss a few things in the trunk or whatever then it's stupid. The X has a whole lot more things going for it as far as being practical goes. I saw a vid ( on edmunds ) which may have been posted that said the new Z will run the 1/4 in 13.4 which is faster than the best X times stock that i've seen, but the Vishnu sp? people have gotten a 12.7 out of the X for 995.00 ( also heard that on edmunds ) so to be able to drive a car that can actually hold you and a few friends, still be sporty AND can be driven all year round unless you live somewhere where it never snows or rains... it's the better deal to me
^^ I am not doubting it but I also dropped about .4 sec when I swapped my run flats 255's on my 335i with 275' BF Goodrich drag radials street. I wouldn't be surprised if somone later on actually could run a 12.99 on a bone stock 370z with a good set of tires and optimal conditions(weather, elevation, track, driver tires).
The 370z probably has a nice rear lsd. I beleive this car has 12's with minor work(air filters, tires, test pipes, etc)
