No, Mitsubishi's engine is a 2.0L and is significantly different. The new engine is not Mitsubishi developed, it has been developed out of the new Global Engine Alliance plant in Dundee, Mi.

I think maybe the "engineer" needs to look who the major players were in the development of the World Engines. Hmmm Mitsubishi, Hyundai, and Diamler Chrysler come to mind.
Quote I found interesting, unlikely but interesting:

So when will AWD be available, since FWD isn't too functional.
Do you mean hoping for traction or hopping? Drawing your own conclusions isn't always accurate. AWD and FWD have their own strengths and weaknesses. Many WRXs and Evos have a hard time keeping up with Neon SRT4s after launch. There is an Evo owner in Surpsise, AZ who was shamed by a merely fwd Caliber mule on Bell Road back in January...

As far as the engine is concerned I heard rumors that indeed it might be the exact same 2.4l found in Caliber SRT but I also heard rumors that it will be a 2.ol that will reach from 320-350 (according to Popular Mechanics). But then again I also read long time ago that one of the executives was talking about Evo X and he mentioned a softer ride and larger displacement engines (2.4l is certainly a larger displacement than 2.0), besides I am not worrying, I know that the Ralliart team (or whoever is responsible for tuning the Mitsubishi engines at the design level) will make sure that the stock HP count will be higher than the current stock EVOs which is at 286HP if I am not mistaking. But then again HP is not everything.
Mitsubishi is trying to make a come back here, they probably sold a few secretes to the SRT group (DaimlerChrysler) but definately not all of them and they definately will also have new techniques and technologies available from their years of rally research. From all the reviews that I have read so far it seems that Mitsubishi is going all out with the EVO X and they should go all out and risk it otherwise they won't have a product that will generate any noise around them and a small volume car company such as Mitsu needs a niche car for other car sales. At least that is my opinion. Mitsubishi is not Honda nor Toyota where their sales volume allows them to release rather bland cars and public still buys them but thats because of a well established name and auto-culture.

You are right on!!! That is exactly what this is..............Mitsu would be insane to have no EVO product for that period of time. Heck they have to have something on the dealership lots that sell!

Okay, so Mitsubishi was just teasing us with the Sportback Concept that the company showed at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It was a preview for the big thing: the actual Lancer Evolution X to be shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in late October. Mitsubishi handed out a photo of its Evo X Concept this week, and not only are we showing you this photo. We have information regarding the next-gen sports sedan that you won't find anywhere else.
Judging by the looks of the Evo X, the car will be slightly larger. But that's not to say it will be heavier. We hear that the curb weight of the car will remain relatively the same. Mitsubishi designers went all out with this car, giving it a very aggressive face. The most noticeable thing about the front fascia is the grille. No longer the small rectangular opening, the new grille is large, and a bit Audi-esque (with the bottom half going into the front bumper). The slim canted headlights probably won't make it to production, we expect larger more prominent headlights, like those on the current Evo.
Powering the Evo X will be the 4B11 all-aluminum engine. A new turbocharger will add power to the MIVEC-equipped 2.0-liter powerplant, and we hear that it will produce about 320 bhp. Look for the Evo X to go on sale sometime in 2007.

so its gonna be a different engine from the SRT4's?thats good news
if i get an Evo X, id not want to know i have a DODGE engine under the hood(unless its a TURBO HEMI)
Id like to see a displacement bump though, up to maybe the rumored 2.4, so theres less lag.

Mitsubishi North America has VIN # codes listed for their recent models (and some 2007 models) 4B11 engine is listed already. Lancer/Evo not on there yet.
