But the question is how similar is the new Evo X engine to the Caliber SRT engine. One thing about Mitsubishi is that they know their turbos. 4B11 is probably some derivative of the World Engine (the basic aluminum block is the shared part but everything else is mostly done by Mitsubishi/Hyundai/Chrysler own specifications), but then again it is replacing 4G63 which is probably one of the best engines ever produced in the automotive history as it can take any kind of a beating and mod past 800hp. So I don't think that I am the only one that knows this, Mitsubishi knows it too. Thats why I think they are replacing the old engine with something even better. Otherwise what would be the point of replacing the good ol' 4G63 if Mitsubishi wants to get back to profitability? If they wouldn't have something better than 4G63 (and we all know 4G63 is a great engine) why replace it?

Lighter weight, lower emissions and fuel consumption, and smoother operation is what I keep reading about the "next generation" gasoline engines from Mitsubishi. Along with the speculation of more HP, etc. from the factory also.
I hope whatever is in the X is mod-friendly, even though I never end up doing many major mods to my cars.

4B11 will be an all-new engine meaning that it won't be too mod friendly at the beginning as it simply takes time to research the capabilities of a new engine but who knows, maybe it will be even more capable than the engine it is replacing. It will be all-aluminum and not cast iron, but aluminum is lighter and when properly shaped is as strong as iron plus it conducts heat a lot better (faster) than iron. When 4G63 was released inlate 1980s it wasn't mod friendly either as it also was too new back then and it took time to see just how over engineered it was and Mitsu did a great job on over-engineering that one.
from what i hear is the 4b11 mivec is the new reg lancer engine and the 4b11 turbo is the new ralliart fwd turbo engine. if you look at the engine descriptions from year to year the evo is listed DOHC turbo. my source is a engineer at MMNA so its a pretty good one. i would also expect to see a turbo eclipse again too. if yoiu think well whats going to compete with the new srt 4 caliber well its allready in black and white but with out a name. i'm sure in the next few months they will release some info on it but mitsu is going back to the turbo business

It is a bit odd that they are testing mules on the ring in Germany if they are still 2 years from finished production. The average time from complete concept to production is usually 2-3 years (The Camaro concept doesn't have a finalized platform and even GM can manage a 3 year development cycle). The X has an existing platform and engine (already in production on the Caliber) so it should be faster than that.
The biggest suprise we can hope for is an early 07 launch as an 08 model. I think you can call an 08 model anytime after Feb 1 or maybe Mar 1.

I think gas will be $3.50-4.00 in CA by the time the X comes out, and that will bring death to the sports car. I'm sure if cars don't sell in CA, it's over...

I know most of its history, Ive been longing for it to come here since i first played Gran Turismo 2. The point is that I think that the Evo X will come withoout warning. That one day soon youll just see it in showrooms. And that's is what Im scared of because I thinkt eh X will ruin the Evo line for some reason. IIt's as if the Evo has become a lil bit soft because it doesn't seem as raw or as hardcore as the previous ones were. They might be loading the X with too many amenities and who knows? They might just throw in an automatic transmission or one of those SPORTRONIC ones with a manual shift gate...

"But where will the Evolution evolve next? "A wider power range, a softer ride, and quieter. This is our direction," Iwata says. Then he points to a Mitsubishi-owned Volkswagen R32 fitted with VW's silky-shifting Direct Shift Gearbox and asks, "What do you think of this transmission? It is very interesting to us." To some people, an Evo with paddle shifters and a mellow ride, an Evo that doesn't explode forward at 3000 rpm but merely wafts to higher velocities like a piano pushed off a skyscraper-well, that's just no Evo at all."

I would have to agree with you that the previous models were hardcore and who know they really might throw in a sportronic but when they make it a 5-6 speed manual then the X isn't all that bad. Although the X looks completely out of line with all the previous evos, it is going to be one mean machine when it hits the streets of the US. I know for a fact that tuners are anxious to get this beast and make modifications to it. We have a mid 9 sec evo already so I am probably going to guess that if the X was the last ever made production of the Evos then it will be modified to its potential. Just think of the possibilities. Btw, when are you planning on getting an evo?
