I did my first oil change on the Evo this past weekend and this thread was extremely helpful. I was able to break the oil filter loose with some oil filter pliers. I had to get creative about how to get the pliers around the filter but after I got a good grip on the filter with them and broke it loose I was able to finish the job by hand. I hand tightened the new filter when I put it on.
The old crush washer is painted black and difficult to see on the drain plug so I had to use a small flathead screwdriver and a hammer to take it off. I bought an M14 replacement washer at my local auto parts store.

what are ya doing about the oil in the oil cooler? Dont need to flush it with cheap crap and mix good and crappy oil together (high quality vs lower quality..not used and new oil)

Great write up! Although I did my oil change before I read this. I was curious about the dip stick levels. I don't have my manual, so I wasn't sure. It is kind of obvious which is full and what is low. Thank you sir!

I have a question... were you able to get the oil filter off the car while the car was jacked up off the ground or in the air on a lift... cuz i've tried to take that damn thing off twice already and i've spent almost an hour under the car with the oil filter wrench and still no avail... i'm comming up on my third oil change on my X and i really want to get that filter off so i can put my new K&N one on with a 14mm blot fitting for easy removal

Yes, definitely you get the oil filter off the car while it's jacked up; you most likely don't have enough clearance to remove the access panel's 9 10mm bolts. What kind of oil wrench are you using? I've used the "socket" style that fits over the filters, same one as I use for the Toyota Avalon, for two years, and another 10 years on the toyota before that. It's never been hard. Here's a sample pic; not sure if the right size is 74mm, I don't have it in front of me while at work

Remember, the right tool for the job makes every job easier. The corrolary is that the wrong tool makes every job a PITA.

Edit: don't buy a $22 tool. These are like $5-7 at Walmart, Autozone, etc. It's the same size that fits the 1997 Avalon/Camry/Lexus 3.0 Litr engine

(How handy is that? I also share tools with my Evo and my 1999 Ford Super Duty LOL)

I'm gonna give a thumbs up to those who have bought new crush washers. I've changed mine about dozen times, probably a few more, and there is a tiny bit of seepage that "soils" my undercarriage access panel and gets it a little dirty btwn changes.

^ I checked mine just a few minutes ago. It says 75mm. 74, 75, that's what you're looking for. Glad to help.
