"They really don't respond all that poorly to mods, but they are more expensive to mod than the Evo. I think the majority of the issues come from the just-adequate turbo and the complexity of the engine management.

As an example, straight from SPT (Subaru Performance Tuning), they claim that with their CATBACK exhaust, COLD AIR INTAKE, and HEAT SHIELD that the STi/STI will yield an additional 40 hp/25 ftlbs tq to the wheels, if I recall correctly (I'll check to make sure it WAS at the wheels, and then post back...). They claim they had dynoed the car. Whether it's true or not, who knows?

I think when going all out on mods, the Evo is the way to go, but just for adding a few mods to enhance the driving experience and having a slightly less-hardcore ride, the STi is great."

I would agree with that for the most part, the stock turbo definetely falls on it's face in the last 1k rpm's or so, unlike the stock turbo on an EVO. I'm also envious of how cheap/easy it is to do a nice cam swap on a 4g63, my friend picked up some very nice power with his 272's. When you start swapping out turbos/engines I still don't see where the major price difference is IMO, but I may very well be wrong.

A buddy of mine has an Evo that he did cams on and I think he said they cost him around $650, and he paid about $250 for the install. I haven't personally priced cams for STis/STIs but from what I understand they cost around $900-$1000!

Don't forget about what a b*tch changing the plugs are on the STi/STI! OMG!

Regarding my previous post that you copy and pasted, I checked the SPT catalog and the STi/STI was claimed to pick up 45hp/24 ftlbs tq at the crank, not at the wheels as I previously mentioned. There was no mention of an ECU tune. I would speculate that more power could be picked up with an ECU tune. Still, whatever the case, if those figures hold true, a 45 hp gain with a catback exhaust, intake, and heat shield is not a bad gain at all. Figure that's about 340-345 hp in a 3300 lb vehicle. That combo makes for a pretty respectable ride IMO.

The STi/STI is absolutely horrifying to work on. Just thinking about working on a Flat 4 will give me nightmares. I love the sound, and I love the feel, but damn, I do NOT look forward to working on them.

4 cams to change vs 2 and requires a motor pull to do easily. In and of itself its far easier to pull a motor with a subaru than a Mitsu. Strike one however

Common shared intake manifold between the heads that requires the air to turn 90* before turning 90* again to enter the port. Ball

FMIC requires 6.7' of piping unless you do an intake reversal. Strike 2

I cant put 275's under a subaru like I can an Evo. Ball

Turbo is way too small out of the box, but really is any turbo ever large enough? Ball

The turbo is also mounted 4 feet from the exhaust port, this coupled with intake ports that are WAY TOO SMALL to make real power without HIGH BOOST or extensive reworking leads to...Strike 3

However some cool things about subarus are:

CP makes the 2.8L "big block"
Transmission service is easy (which is really good considering how frequent it is in comparison to an Evo).
Boxer sound cant be beat...EvAr
V-Mount intercooler setup is possible on a Subaru and not a Mitsu.
Because of the excessively large bore, Subarus tune like a SBC more than an import.
They also have an excellent R/S ratio out of the box

It took me 7K to run 12.20's on race gas with my WRX, and only 1200 on pump with my Evo. I will out slalom and out corner any Sti on the same compound tire as long as I run my size and he runs his.

It not that Sti doesn't have a good engine. Its that turbo I don't like. The stock turbo only will yield around 320 to the wheels, thats including the expense and hassle of putting on a FMIC.When you swap turbos then its a toss up. I still can't get over the handling differences though.

That would be a good enough reason in itself to shop elsewhere. Money talks and bullsh*t walks. You figure that the Evo is about $2000 cheaper than the STi/STI, so being that your trade was worth $4000 more, and the $2000 difference, that's a $6000 savings....even greater when modding.

I went with the Evo because sinister smells like poo.

How's it going sinister? Haven't posted in the same thread as you in awhile. Hope everything's going well. A nice for the STi owner. I expect one too.

Ok. This is coming first hand from someone who owned an STi. I purchased an '03 and like anyone else, stock isn't good enough. So, I spent some time and a lot of money to realize that the car can not handle modifications like the EVO. Guys, without a joke, I destroyed the car with mods. They were simple, but the car could not handle it. Now whether or not that's changed from '03 to now, I don't know, but I would say that if anyone's looking to make a decision between the EVO and the STi; go with the Mitsu. There's more interior room, better handling, a sleeker design and a more mature, yet aggressive, look to it. Enjoy, because I love my EVO

I had a WRX before I bought my Evo in 03, and have a lot of WRX/STi friends. Here's why I didn't buy an STi

-Tiny OEM turbo
-Top mounted intercooler stock
-Exhaust routing is miles long from engine to turbo (LAG). Boxer front engine is crappy, IMO
-Super crappy gear spacing
-Chassis is not as solid as the Evo's
-EJ257 doesn't have much rev potential, problem for big turbos without major build.
-Seats aren't supportive
-EJs that have exhaust on them sound like a Harleys

In short, it would cost thousands and thousands of dollars to get an STi where I wanted it to be.

Maybe if they didn't destroy the front end on the 2007 Sti, I may have looked closer, and also, I want 2.0L, not 2.5L, so right off the bat its slightly heavier and has a little more torque.

I just went to a "show" yesterday and there were some really awesome cars, one thing I noticed was that most of the WRX's/STI's had body kits and head light mods, but not many EVO's did because EVO's look hot right off the floor!!! And Subaru has made the front end even worse looking for 2007!!

This is somthing that I never hear mentioned enough! The STi feels MUCH smaller inside. I am 6' 4" and this is a noticeable problem for me. There is also more leg room in the back. When driving or riding in my freinds WRX it feels very cramped compared to my evo. Also the RS door panels without the window switches gives you a couple more inches in width for your left leg..... witch is nice when your tall.

And at worst an even trade for my si. I mite even get money for the si. He's hookin me up good. N I lyk evo's alot more than sti's.
