Europe has been changing their emission laws. Ferrari and Lamborghini have to change with them to sell new cars.

It's all about "Marketing" and "Image". All auto manufacturers are jumping in on the "environmental" bandwagon, the brands that refuse to go with the trend will be left behind. Mitsubishi is no exception, they are just trying to put up a good image & make a profit. Is that really hard to understand? Seriously.

Most people realize that they are following the trend, but that won't change peoples opinion on what they want for their sport sedan or supercar. The entire environmental aspect of hybrids is pretty pointless. they are more costly to produce, cause more polution from mining to get the materials for the batteries and all for a slight increase in fuel economy that will take you at least 10 years to make up the cost for the increase in price. Im all for making alternative fueled cars, but hybrids are not the way to go... its just another stupid trend

Stupid trend or not, it IS still the current trend. The general mindset of your average car buyer is if it's a hybrid, it's green.

^ I never claimed that hybrids are really any "greener" than your average econobox (like a Corolla?). It's just that so much marketing has been invested in the hybrid "badge" that a big majority of car buyers actually believe it is one of the answers in the fight against global warming.

Until they release a car that runs on air (yes, there are engines that run on compressed air), I'll stick with the good ole internal combustion engine. Hybrids are a farce. Until we can produce clean electricity, so are electric cars.

Well, we can, and do. Just a good chance that you're not buying it currently.

Top Gear was obviously going for shock value here, with the truth taking a backseat to theatrics. You can't honestly believe that transporting nickel from a nickel mine to a battery factory results in a Prius having a higher carbon footprint than a Land Rover, can you? I've tried to track down the study those numbers came from. You'll find some odd discrepancies, such as the Land Rover/Hummer vehicles being assigned a 400,000 mile lifespan and the Prius limited to 100k before end-of-life. Also, the math in the 'studies' is not revealed at all, which completely discounts them in my book. After all, the majority of your gasoline has to be transported from foreign countries as well. The difference is that your gasoline is continuously transported from other countries and then burned up.

Batteries, on the other hand, are constructed once and then the majority of the materials can be recycled. If you look at the top of a Prius battery, you'll find a toll-free Toyota phone number you can call to send the battery in for recycling, and Toyota will send you a reward for doing so ($150 from what I've heard).

The M3 vs. Prius track test was good entertainment, no doubt, but entirely specious when it comes to discussing hybrids. The vast majority of M3 owners will never even see a track, instead using their performance car to get from point A to B, which is where the Prius absolutely excels.

I, for one, am excited to see what Mitsubishi comes up with. Really, though, I feel like there are plenty of steps that could be taken between the current gas-guzzling motor and a full-on hybrid. The Evo X's gas consumption is utterly ridiculous relative to other vehicles on the market. Even Hyundai has developed a 270HP+ 2.0 liter turbo that gets 30+ MPG on the freeway. I still can't believe Mitsubishi and Subaru haven't adopted direct injection, for example.

And from a tuning perspective, you should hope they don't.

No, I still hope they do. I'm familiar with the MS3 and the associated issues, but the aftermarket community will have to catch up sooner or later.
