In the spirit of efficiency and keeping engine temps down, I ordered some Techline TurboX exhaust coating.

http://www.techlinecoatings.com/Exhaust.htm at the very bottom. I'll be coating the mani, turbo exhaust side and downpipe. I'm going to try and get the inside of the downpipe, but only the outside of the "pre-turbo" pieces.

So, I've bought some vac tube, some coolant tube, the oil tube is on it's way, the evo9 bov is on order....things are really looking up after that smashed bov, I thought for a minute I might just say F'it until next month, but not so!

I painted my a-pillar to match the light gray of my interior, it's not exact though....and I hate that. I may remove all the middle and back ones just so i can paint everything and have it be identical.

<Important stuff here>
So, the downpipe is going to be my most problematic spot. As I've mentioned, I need to retain the cat just because of inspection reasons, and also my vegetarian wife might have a (for lack of a better word) cow. So, question is this. Has anyone taken their evo8 downpipe, and tried to bolt it directly up to the lancer cat? Has anyone taken an evo8 downpipe, connected it up to an evo8 cat, then connected that to the stock (by stock I mean the location, not necessarily the actual exhaust has to be stock) lancer exhaust? Has anyone removed the lancer cat, and connected the evo8 downpipe to the lancer stock exhaust using one of these and some tubing with 2.5" flanges?

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MPE-59925/

Basically, the real question is "Where does the downpipe sit after the turbo is connected on?" Everyone I have seen either has custom exhaust, or the one guy who doesn't has a test pipe chopped to about 8 inches that sits between the downpipe and the (what I assume is) stock lancer exhaust. Any official answer (to "distance between the evo8 DP installed and the lancer exhaust")? I'm not trying to avoid welding (cause cody will hook me up with that madness), I'm just tryin to make sure I have my ducks in a row before install day.
</Important stuff here>

Oh, feel free to thrown in anything about flange angles being different if you want, but that part I can at least eye-ball with my car jacked up, the rest I have to install the turbo/mani/downpipe to check. I'll be doing that sometime soon, just to make sure I'm all set, and so I know what to grind off the turbo, and how much. I want to have a really good idea what it's going to end up being, so if I know we're going to need to weld, I can get the parts I need ahead of time, and we'll just weld the section up with the cat at that time.

I guess very worst case scenario...i'll just cut my e-bay catback exhaust, that way the stock stuff can all go back in if i want it to. probably ought to swap out the cat for an "evo cat" or a universal 2.5" but I'm going to wait and see if anyone has good news on an easy to piece together combo.

*edit* final thought before bed, get 2 of these and weld one into a "testpipe" to make the connection with the stock exhaust, and then weld another into the ebay exhaust a little ways back? I hear from some honda guys they are REALLY high flow, as in you can smell the exhaust like you're almost catless. I really am not looking forward to inspection time after the turbo, lol....stupid austin and their stupid "green" everything.
I haven't snuck out under the car yet, because it's been my wife's b-day, but does anyone have any thoughts about the above cat questions or the placement of the exhaust vs stock lancer cat location?

I will take pics when i get back your flanges from the evo 8 downpipe will not bolt up to the stock lancer cat your going to need an evo 8 cat and downgrading for your exhaust unless someone did something different but that was my experience.

Not so hot on the fuel pump. Very informative to learn the process of swapping it...but I guessed wrong in thinking a 8/9 sized fuel pump would fit. I hear the X fits like butter, so if I get everything setup and hit 10 psi eventually, that'll be when I upgrade....for now just selling off the 9 to the first buyer in my FS thread, lol.

I don't know if it's because the car is 7 years old now, or if it knocked like this from the factory...but good lord it looks nasty.

On a positive note though, I got the gauge pillar all painted up, and then mounted the gauges in it. I've got some wires run, but I'll run the rest this weekend.

hey you should put your wideband by your steering like me and 03 lance did unless your planning on running just 3 gauges. Just a thought. How soon are you close to your build? im about to take more pictures of my setup and possibly make a video of my car this week

It looks pretty much on par with the knock I was seeing with my car pre-turbo

I thought about the steering column, but i just want the 3 gauges for now. It'll move to the steering if I get an oil pressure gauge. You know, that's the one thing I hate about reading people's builds, I want to see like, full blown, all out, no holds barred, "watch you when you sleep" video of how it goes down. Most post...5, 6 maybe, pics and it's only enough to wet my appetite. I want dinner dang it! I'm thinking about including a video camera in the purchase of my turbo, like one of those Kodak ones or a Flip or something. I want people to feel like they got to sit in the garage with me, take the first test drive, and follow the whole thing with me. Anyhow...August is when it goes down I think. I am going on vacation this week, then super busy at work next week, then starting August I'm going to try to take 3 days off of work and just go nutz in the garage. I also measured the length of the stock cat (16"), the distance from the stock downpipe mounts to the end of the downpipe ie the downpipe flange (basically .5"), and then the distance from the evo dp mounts to the downpipe flange (5"). So, all this means to me is that I need a catalytic converter that is approx 11" and a few 2.5" flanges to fashion something street legal. Magnaflow makes a cat (high flow even) that is 13" total length, and the body is 9", which I'm thinking I'll order when I come back from vacation. Once that's here, there is nothing else to buy. I went ahead and bough injectors, I went ahead and bought the tbolt clamps, I got my 9bov in the mail....ah, maybe a drillbit for the pan tap, if I don't have anything in the garage.

I'm thinking until I get the turbo installed, no harm in irnoning out that knock...I'll go do that once I've had some coffee. The only thing I am going ot do is pull timing, that seems safe enough right? I'm thinking I'll add up all of my knock results, most of which are nearly identical to that pic, and just pull like 3 degrees in those areas and see if it reduces the knock.

I cleaned up the downpipe, soon I'll ceramic coat it. The turbo hotside is much more difficult to clean up, so I'm going to go buy an "air eraser" and some alumininum oxide blasting media from harbor freight and see if I can't get it totally cleaned up enough to make the ceramic stick real nice. On the plus side though, I measured the saab injectors I got, they are 13ohm which is the same as WRX ones...so that's good. Also, when taking the hotside off, I got to see the exhaust turbine or whatever, and that thing looks brand new, no "dinks" or anything on it. Hope it stays that way when I put it back together, lol.
