Just to add, a swapped manual will never be as reliable as a stock manual, and probably won't feel as sturdy.

Well that's purely as a general rule. Some shops can do better than the factory can but they also charge a hefty amount for their skills. The average shop would be able to make an automatic into the manual like the factory can make a manual, it's simply a matter of resources.

Plus when swapping a manual into an auto, a hole has to be cut for the clutch pedal, etc. It involves some custom midification so the quality of the stock parts drops a little. Someone here has done it. I'm pretty sure even they said it felt good, but not quite like one from the factory feels.

parts list.....sigh

GAH...i'm actually really tired of being told i can't convert it to a manual. I love my little car and its only down side for me is its lackluster 4 speed auto. Frankly i owe 9k on the car at the moment....trading the car is not an option. But I know a mechanic and have done similar work on other cars so i'm reasonably sure that with a parts list i can do this change and even if i can't my mechanic friend can. It would be nice to have a parts list for this change maybe some pics and even some other manuals that would work with the engine. It seems to me that the 4g94 was used in a mirage for a while and that the manual from that would be more prevalent and there for easier to find/ cheaper. I could be wrong in this. For me its more worth while to make a car that i love better than to trade it in on a car thats already better just cause people say it can't be done or it costs too much. If i can get the parts for a grand or so then i'm doing it. It may take me sleeping at my friends garage for nights on end but if i can get the parts i'm going to do it. AND I"LL TAKE PICTURES!!! Anyway this is just me asking stubbornly for resources if anyone has any. Resources being parts lists and for the one person who actually got this done maybe some more info on problems they ran into when doing this swap.

Thanks!

Well the only person I know of who did it had it done by a shop. If you want all that info, your going to have to find it yourself. If you want to go out and buy other transmissions to test, go ahead but for most people, just getting the money to swap in the known transmission is difficult.

I'm just saying that its annoying to ask for information and to even have the people who know say its not possible rather than saying i suggest against it but heres what you need if you were.

From reading everything in this thread heres what i have gathered so far as a parts list so far:

Transmission
center console
pedals (at least the clutch and brake)
clutch pedal assm.
guage cluster
ECU
wiring harnass(or at least parts of it)
linkages

There are things i would like to know like i know that on many cars the starter is mounted on the transmission itself. Is this true of the lancer? And if so are the brackets the same?

I realize there are going to be questions that can only be answered by someone who has done the swap but things like will the manual transmission from a lancer before 02 fit? or what are the differences between a lancer from 03 and an 05? Is there anything in the small mechanical differences that might prevent me from using a 02 or 03 transmission in an 05? Any information that people might have would be useful. Eve if you haven't done a swap technical information is always useful.

Thanks

After much research and talk with some mechanics I know at the local Mitsu dealership down the street from my house, all Lancers (ES, OZ, RA) from 02-06 all have the exact same transmission. It's a direct bolt swap from the auto to manual and vice versa.
